I have a question for folks that do their own tanning and then make fur items out of the pelts.

Do you ever work with damaged pelts? Not bad damage but pelts that are missing a portion of the pelt. These are pelts that are not suitable for wall hangers but could be used for fur items - ear muffs, pouches, etc. Is it worth your time to mess with them?

I have some red fox pelts that are damaged. They have good fur (what is there) and nice color. The pelts are slightly stale but still dressable, in my opinion. I’ll post a few pics below.

I’m trying to figure out what to do with them other than send them to the landfill.

There is plenty to salvage there.

I think so but what would some one be willing to pay for a fox like that?

I thought that you made hats, and such...there's definitely enough there for a couple ear warmers. [Linked Image]
This is one I made for my daughter.

I don’t do any tanning. And I’m not talented enough things. I buy and sell pelts. That is it!!

Nice pic, by the way.

There must be some craft sites that may have a classified section....

I’d certainly be interested,, but I can’t legally buy raw fur here in Illinois without a fur buyer’s license.

I’m aware of the fur buying license issue on raw pelts.

I’m not selling the pelts. I’m giving them to some one/any one. The pelts are FREE. The recipient pays handling ($5.00 per pelt) plus shipping.

I’m not sure what you need in Illinois to possess raw pelts. I’m assuming there are red fox in Illinois.

The problem right now is dressing cost,
It cost the same to dress a skin that has 50% useable fur as it does to dress one that has 100% useable fur.
So anything made from the damaged pelts after dressing is more expensive. For example,a fur hat would require one good pelt. You would require 2 or at best 1 and half of the damaged ones for the same hat.
There is useable fur in those pelts and if someone does their own fur dressing, there is some money to be made from them.
I think your offer is a good one Wissmiss to the right person.

Try a fly tieing group. I've traded with several people for Flys and other men stuff.

Don't need to be tanned.

Boco - I’m aware of the cost of commercial tanning and agree with you (did I really say that……. )

That’s why I was asking about home tanners. Lots of nice fur, shame to see it go to waste.

Not sure flying is an option. I’ve got pounds of tanned red fox scraps that I can’t sell.

I’m sure something will work out.
