Beauty! Awesome country to live in. You switching to snares once it really starts to snow?

Why would you waste waxed dirt this time of year? Is it cold by you?

Above my place yesterday morning, there were pockets of frost. Good you're going to some sort of antifreeze this early. I'll look forward to your catches. Got good sign?

Jack

Yea found some fresh turds, set around them today. Found one track in an old mud puddle that looked wolfy, I was way off the beaten path so I really doubt it was someone’s dog, but it hasn’t rained in a while so not much for tracks

Opposite. Waxed sand takes less wax. Dirt generally has organic matter and is more porous so it soaks up more wax.

Starting it out does tend to take forever to get land sets in. Unless you dont care at all about bedding the traps lol. Once you learn the shortcuts and get the muscle memory in, they will speed up. Looks like you're after some wolves?

Yup, wolves. Currently taking me about 30 mins a set.

Those are some of Bernie Nelson’s trap setters, I bought them at the wolf class he taught. I don’t have anything to compare them to, but I have zero complaints, they work great.

I’m so green I don’t even know what ADC work is! Trying to put the hurting on them to give the elk a chance.

It’s my first season ever trapping anything other than mice in the barn so it’s a bit like drinking from the firehouse, but yes when snaring opens planning on giving that a shot too. Once there’s 10 feet of snow up there legholds can be a challenge, or so I have heard.

Day 2: Nothing in my traps from yesterday, while out 4 wheeling last summer I found some old roads that are essentially abandoned. It’s a solid 2 hour drive from anything paved. The only entrance for a truck runs through a draw and it’s so grown over you would have to crush brush and pinstripe your truck for several miles to get to anything approaching a decent road. The other entrances are all single track except for a little out of the way 4 wheeler trail that looks like it goes to nowhere. On the main route there are some dirt bike tracks, but most roads have no tracks at all. After 2 weeks of bow season with every yahoo in the woods out hunting, not finding any tire tracks tells me I’m pretty much by myself. Additionally these roads are not on the map so it’s legal to set on them. That’s my disclaimer.

Got another 4 set all within several piles of fairly fresh wolf scat. Multiple piles in other stages of decomposition as well, so I feel like I’m in a good spot. I’m going back in the next couple days with my trapping buddy and that whole area is going to look like the North Korean DMZ.

It’s beautiful country and honestly even if I don’t catch a thing I can’t think of a better day.

Best topic on here, I'm jealous too.
Stay back. If me, on remakes and new sets
I'd lose the sticks and stones.
You mention turds a lot.
Had good results using those for paw guides.
BUT, always a butt, I've never seen a wild wolf
and will now shut up lol.
Sets look good for first timer.
