So... I bought this handsome feeder at a rummage for $2 this spring, I thought that was a good deal. After I gave the lady my money- she commented " it's such a nice feeder, we bought it for our cabin and no birds would come to it". Well, she was right- the seed you see has been in it since April- during the same time period our other feeders get hammered. Thoughts? Is it the style or color?

That’s interesting… color maybe, just a guess. I have one on the place that is a dull weathered red that the birds use.
I’d try taping and making it up and see if that makes a difference before doing a permanent change.

Hard tot ell in the photo, but is there actually seed in those little squares where the birds can get to it? A few of our feeders need cleaned pretty regular, chaff builds up and the seed won't filter down to where the birds can peck it. Might change seed too, I have found the finches by us sure don't like old niger seed.

Perch width can matter also. Seems like birds don't really like to sit sideways when they eat. If the perch bar is too close to the "glass" they will go to other feeders first.

Where a feeder is hung makes a difference too. The birds by us prefer a feeder under a tree canopy, not just out on a post in the yard. We have several cooper's hawks, so I think the smaller birds like the cover when feeding.

Oh, I've also seen that our birds prefer the wood or plastic wood feeders over metal feeders, especially in winter.

Maybe your birds are John Deere guys and are offended by the Case IH red

Lol... it's Kubota orange and maybe the tiller noise was too much.
There's seed in the little compartments - squirrel proof and bird proof!

I think the feeder needs to lose the little holes on the tray those may restrict a bird to much . I just throw the feed on a concrete bench in the winter and let it be a free for all brawl

On feeders with an open trough, I put in pieces of 1/2" hardware cloth. This helps to keep the sparrows from throwing all the seed out. Well, that and a pellet rifle.

Those holes do look mighty small though, especially for something like a cardinal, with a shorter, heavier beak.
