Nice doe. Will be a good eater. Just the right size to pull out of the woods.

I ran across a picture story book my wife had made for the boys several years back. Pictures of there hunting, fishing, and first time when I got back to trapping to show them how. O my goodness they looks so young like babies posing with their first several deer and catches. Beaver about as big as they were and really struggling to get a coyote loaded in the back of the gator. I can't believe they were really that small and getting it done. Now they couldn't set most of the traps but they could place snares, dig beds, holes, drive stakes, and help me pick locations to set.

Really brought back memories. I'm running out of first to do with them. Guess I'm going to have to make the time and come off the money and start taking trips to hunt things we don't have like elk, mule deer, pronghorn and wild pigs.

Probably pigs and pronghorn becuse I think they will be the most affordable. But I would love to make it elk or mule deer.

Edit to add. I can't remember I I posted this or not but he did most to the gutting with instruction. I cut out around the butt and split the ribs and pelvis but he did the rest and about 40% of the skinning, and 20% of the butchering. Would have had him do more but it was warm out and it needed to be put on ice quickly.

Teaching them right, you’d better start getting bonus points now if you want to go after elk, antelope, etc . That’s the worst part getting a tag in some states, probably most states

Yes I planed to start this year but got busy working way to many of my days off and most weeks 76 to 96 hrs this spring and the deadlines got passed me. That and I know nothing about it and was worried I may get a tag drawn a for one of them and not be ready or be able to get the time off to go that year. A lot of the western reges are like reading something in a foreign language to me having never hunted out there.

Here it's buy tags and go hunt. None of the draw or build points up to get tags or putting in for different zones.

Add in I know not a thing about the animals listed, weather or habits. When they are up high or down low.

I have a bunch to learn. A buddy was going to help me get lined out on building up points. He got me thinking about it when he told me he had finally had enough point to hunt some trophy area in CO. Had been putting in for 31 years to get enough points.. he did shoot a nice bull and so did his buddy. . That blew my mind but told me I better get started building points. Maybe by the time i get enough to go i will be willing to come off the money.. The youngest will be old enough to be put in this comming year from my understanding.

That's awesome. Great job. Nothing better to harvest deer with than a bow IMO.

This is great to see and he has already generated a passion and knowledge base with 16 deer under his belt. Bowhunting affords him the opportunity to study deer, deer behavior, deer travel patterns- what a great experience for him and dad- a special moment and memory- outstanding!

PF a coworker took her husband and son to Alabama two thanksgivings ago and went hog hunting at night, used the outfits thermals and they killed several including a couple nice boars and it wasn’t expensive . She said they all had a blast so that’s a good place to start

Good for him! I remember when I shot my first deer. You're hooked after that.

Most in this country have things people in other countries only dream about. Yet, they want America to be more like those other countries.

Will you teach him how to make Buckskin out of the hide?
It is not hard to do.

I remember when I was a Kid I made a Knife, then skinned a groundhog with the knife and tanned the hide to make a sheath for my knife.

I still have a hid from last year scraped salted and partially tacked to the barn wall where the screws thar didn't rip out as the hide dried are still holding ot on place. The hair is starting to fall out of it now.

I have the hide rolled up in a plastic bag ice came in and in a cooler for now it's small deer. But I don't think I will do anything with it being honest. I just don't have time to sit around and craft on things for one. I unfortunately do need about 4 hours of sleep a night and 6 at least once a week.

I would love to be able to do that with every hide we get but I don't know how. And everything is really easy IF you know what your doing.

It would be really awesome to make things out of all our skins. But I can't even get them fleshes well consistently and hobbies for me are very low priority for my availability of time. The few things I make sure I get done for fun each year are take the kids hunting, fishing and outdoor things. The rest is all work at the farm and home or work at the off farm job.

He has really been shooting his bow even more now. His groups have improved greatly and he was shooting out to 30 yards all day yesterday and fairly well. With his lower poundage bow I have him shooting 125gr muzzy not expandable and he should have that new broadhead target shot out in a few week I would say. I gave him 3 muzzys to practice with and keep 3 back to swap out for hunting so thay will be nice and sharp. They didn't have any replacement blades in stock at the bow shop or I would have him shooting them all. But only shooting 3 give his arms a break and keeps me from having to reflech as many arrows with vanes cut off.
