curios what your target velocity is
I know a lot of the cast shooters would run a load of 2400 they were targeting about 1400fps it was a fund to shoot cast bullet load and not a full power by any means
I know someone has the 2400 loads posted on castboolits I recall reading it but it was several years ago generally a faster powder and moderate velocity was their go too
I didn't have any 2400 I went with the Unique type recipie slower yet but man you could shoot all day
I think I was running 6 1/2 or 7 gr power pistol (what I had for powder that was during one of the shortages)under 170gr cast and lubed in 30-30
I could sit and ring steel at 100yards with that load not gas checked , it was a gas check mold I didn't have a chrono then so I don't know what they were going for speed it was a pleasure to shoot almost nothing for recoil

I give you credit for bravery. If I owned a gun that shot a pattern like that I would scrap it and never show anyone the paper.
I guess if you like to tinker with something to make it right you have a great project.

I guess if you like to tinker with something to make it right you have a great project. Showing your mistakes and failures is the best way to learn imo. For every 19 or so people who wanna say something smart or make fun of you there one or two people who are more then willing to help and their the ones to make showing mistakes more then worth it. Shoots 2' all day at 100yd with factory Soft points. Honestly people can make fun of me and my projects they want if it helps them sleep at night and makes em feel all warm and fuzzy but I generally don't care much unless they have some actual advice lol.

I would go the other direction start low and work up
ahhh I found the post or one of them I remember reading Larry Gibson did a lot of testing he found that it wasn't so much a velocity threshold but an RPM threshold with cast
a search looks like Mossin Nagant is a 1 in 9.5 so you probably want velocity around 1600fps would ne my thinking

I have 2 of the Mosin's. Both earlier models.
One is the long type with a scout scope on it.
The other one is a carbine sized with a regular mounted scoop.
Neither shoot very well. I use military ammo. I have soft points 178 grain, for deer season.

My aim was to point out you have a small mountain to climb and I will be quite impressed if you get that thing dialed in.

Much better. Where you get the brass? I too have a long and short version. The scout has the bayonet on it and the long I put into a Boyd stock. No scope on either of them.
