My opinion is that boys who learn how to compete when they are young learn how to deal with life's challenges.
Instead of needing a safe space, they will square up to the problem and start chipping away at it until it's gone.

My boy is just like me- zero talent for any type of ball game but if ya give him something that doesn't think it can be rode or some critter needing to be victimized by a rope and everyone around will remember his name.

He's a lover Savell, not a fighter. lol

Ness, he has a way of doing that. He set new new state records (for his age and weight class) in all three of the events that day by beating his old state records.

He's a stud horse with the fuzzy balls for sure ADC.

When Clayton was younger he won the tri-state mini bull riding title in the 9 and under age group. The 3 states they competed in were KS, NE, and Iowa. Riggin and Teagan Smith from Winterset weren't in his age group which was helpful! They are great little hands and don't get bucked off much.

Tell them to keep their head up when hitting. Football is physics. Hit the other guy harder and faster than he does you and you will be in good shape. Like they used to tell use in high school. Catch someone standing around, put them on the ground. My son played a couple of years but didn't like it much. I tried to get him to get some kicking lessons and try out for place kicker. Be like Tom Dempsey and boot a 60 yarder with a club foot.

My Coach always said, Be the hammer not the nail !! Loved playing it, love watching it. Be super cautious when it comes to head injuries. Concussion was the most crippling injury I’ve ever dealt with in my life.

I would venture to say, anyone that played several years had their brain scrambled a time or two. Even though your legs were still a little wobbly, you were expected to get back in there. But this was the 80's.

I'm of the belief that sports are good for kids, if nothing else it keeps them busy and out of trouble.

The kid might get hurt but there is always risks in life.

.. I hear you ADC… I don’t worry about Bud much .. he’s solid

Older son and I had a rough talk before high school. Too small to keep playing. Has wrestled since he was 5 years old and very tough. Head on was not my concern because he was a hittet. Him getting hit from the side was. The boy was not happy but has wrestling and is still doing very well.

Younger son is much bigger and we don't worry about him. Wrestles too but football is his sport.

Both my boys played, youngest was like yours thought he was 7’ and 350# played nose guard at 6’ 150 lbs until senior year. He’s 40 now and does marathons lol. No contact sports, says he’s to old.

… I still got ribs that are offset from my sternum from that mindset lol … but I I’d rather hit a Mac truck head on than run a marathon lol

Coach begged my buddies and I to play football.
We told him it’s the wrong time of the year! We had corn to shell and critters to kill lol.

My son played.
Went to every game for 4 years.
Haven’t been to one before or since lol

I really discouraged my sons from playing football because of the potential for injuries that haunt you sometimes for life. My oldest son ignored my warnings and played high school football and was very good. As a senior he played multiple positions offence and defense and special teams. He was 6-2 and 255 pounds. Had full ride scholarship offers to multiple colleges including Iowa and Iowa State, but didn't want to go to college so he did not. At 26 he went to college, today he is 41 and still has student loan debt! LOL but at least his body is intact.
