I'm a leupold guy myself but what are your thoughts on cabelas branded rifle scopes? Heard years ago they were manufactured by meopta and I'm curious who's making them now? What models hold up to the recoil of a 300 wm and which ones don't?

Thanks in advance

I'm perfectly happy with my Leupolds and Vortex scopes so I have not looked into the Cabelas brand. Plus after the way BPS treated Cabelas hard working dedicated employees, I choose to never do business with them.

I checked some out last trip to cabelas. The guy behind the counter told me not to waste a penny on the cabelas brand scopes

It's been years, but I've handled Cabela's brand scopes in the store, and was not impressed. Some questions that might be important:

How light is the scope? Other factors being equal, a light scope will outlast a heavier scope. And is less weight to carry around. But some cheap scopes are light too, so watch out.

How is the warranty and service on the warranty? I've never had a Leupold fail, but their warranty is lifetime and the service reported to be first-rate.

Where was the scope made? China?

Leupolds are mostly made in the US. They do buy their optical glass lenses from abroad, probably Taiwan, which makes lenses for telescopes, binoculars, rifle scopes and so on. If China ever invades Taiwan, there's going to be a real shortage of optics. It might pay to have a spare scope or two around.

If my bias toward Leupold is showing, it's by intent.

I’m sure we’ve all over heard some sorta BS coming from the expert behind the counter. It’s sad when newbies stroll in looking for a gun and wind up talking to one of the dummies.
I’ve got a cheap Cabelas 3x9 on one of my 22s but not moving it to another rifle. I’d sooner pay a bit more and get a cheap Leupold. Their warranty service is top notch. I had a vx2 on my muzz that I couldn’t dial in a few Septembers ago. Sent it to their shop in Alberta and said that if they couldn’t get it back to me by mid October, no worries as I had another muzz I could use. They emailed back saying I’d have my scope fixed or a new one within 2 weeks. Week and a half later they fixed my scope along with a detailed service sheet of what they all found and did.

I have moved off the Leupolds as well. Zeiss fits the bill and they warranty well if needed tho I haven’t yet.
What is it they say, pay once cry once? The V4 line is very competitively priced.
A lot of it is shooters personal taste at those price points I know, my Zeiss are a notch up on the the better Leupolds and Nikons I own so I am gradually replacing glass.

I had an old one I wasn't impressed

I don't know who they have making them any more

What I can say is the Vortex warrantee is REAL my son just sent in a scope , it is an illuminated recital and it went for a swim a little water got in around the battery gasket he didn't realize and it made a mess

fill out form print it off and mail it in for 8 dollars postal

1 week turn around they replaced it and shipped it back

I have a bunch of Vortex. We will buy more. while my son's scope was off for repair he was ordering the new 3-18x44 first focal plane Mrad.
I have taken a RO training at Vortex Edge , toured Vortex and shot with many of their employees in monthly matches , just a genuinely good group of people who love hunting and shooting and dogs.

The Cabelas Instinct were made by Meopta and are very good scopes for the money. Especially when they blew them out for a little over $200 a couple years back. I rate them on the same level as the VX3 series Leupold but with better adjustment.

The newer cabelas branded scope not so much.
