If only had a machine gun he would not have to run.

Ain't no doubt. Bigfoot Wallace went on to become a famous (infamous) Texas Ranger who was said to be a great tracker and feirce fighter. He was greatly feared by warring Indians and Mexican bandits and now we learn wolves too.

Being hunted by a ravenous hungry pack of wolves has got to be one of the most terrifying experiences a man could ever face.

Thanks for sharing Hoss.

Oh yeah I know! I had one (only saw one) following me while I walked a quad trail through the bush. I hit a 90 degree turn in the trail and when I got a few steps in, I noticed him walking in. He was keeping back and to the side about 50 yards. Almost shot him.

Also one morning while it was still dark I was walking through the bush to one of my treestands. No snow on the ground yet, but the leaves were frozen and crunchy. No sense in trying to be quiet, so I crashed through the bush all the way to my treestand and just got in the stand when I heard something running towards me.
I thought it was going to be a deer, but it turned out being 3 wolves.
One of them got 10 yards from the tree I was in when he figured something was wrong and turned around and got out of there. The other ones followed him too.

They probably thought I was a deer.

But I know they’re watching me and that just freaks me out! And I’ve heard that whistle bark a few times. Not sure what it means. I imagine they’re telling each other time to go, he’s getting too close.

Boco/Jurassic Park,
Please explain what a whistle bark is. I've never even seen a wolf in the wild.

Wolves use the whistle bark to communicate without scaring prey.
It is a very short high pitched bark that sounds like a bird chirp.
I have heard them do it a few times as have other trappers.
One time I remember checking beaver traps in the fall on a walk in trail, the first time I heard the whistle bark,I noticed very fresh wolf tracks in the sand of a bunch of wolves, obviously checking out a couple beavers dead in traps at the shoreline. The tracks were going back and forth about 20 feet in front of the traps. When I was pulling the beaver,I heard the high pitched bark/chirp and the same from a couple other locations not far away,I had heard about wolves whistle barking from Ovila Sylvain another trapper in the area.
It was not alarming at all. Then I heard a loud howl about 50 feet in the bush which was I presume the signal from the adult to the young that It was danger to them, and not a prey. They left after that.

Good info thanks. I've heard a lion chirp, but I admit IDK if was momma callin kittens or a sound that they use regularly. If I wasn't watching it (a her I think) the sound was so small I would have not gone on alert just hearing it with no other info available.

Osky- I like your idea and it might work. The wild hog you don't get trapped gets double smart and worse yet teaches others to avoid your set ups. It's basically an art form to set snares in a cattle pasture (cattle on all yr) but it can be done and those smart piggies who are leading the sounder get snagged first.

That must’ve a wee bit chilling. Last time I heard em howl they were about 1/2 mile away and it was powerful.
