I get asked a lot about trees that will work in smaller yards. The flowering dogwood is a good choice if you don't have the space for the larger species like oaks or even maples.

The flowering dogwood, Benthamidia florida (formerly Cornus florida), is a common native tree in eastern North America. It is highly adaptable and is an excellent choice as a yard tree. In addition to having showy spring blooms, deep green summer foliage, bright red fruits, and awesome fall color, flowering dogwood is also a host plant for dozens of caterpillar species, is important for native pollen specialist bees and the fruits are fed upon by songbirds, gamebirds, and mammals of all types.

Hope you enjoy it! Thanks for watching, Anthony

Great video, Anthony.

I'm in a habit, I'll always call those leaves "petals" . The red fruit looks like rose hips, wonder if they too are high in vitamin C.

Love the pink Dogwood flowers. Don't have any of them up here.

Thanks again !

C Traps - Thank you!

Sharon - The fruit of flowering dogwood may or may not be toxic to humans depending on what source you look at. Regardless they taste really bad so I doubt anyone would eat them unless they had little choice! Critters love them though.

Anthony,
Seems like when I was a kid the berries would still be red in the winter with squirrels and birds cutting them. Mine are turning black already. Is this due to dry weather?

kytrapper - I think the dry weather has had something to do with it. Ours are all off the trees already, they didn't turn black but just fell off. I was out collecting them for seed and it was tough to find many. Been that way with several tree and shrub species this year. A few species did really well in producing seed but overall it has been an off year.

Even though the dogwood fruits fell off a little early the turkeys have been out there scratching them up and eating them.
