Although I trapped with my dad in the late 70s ( I was 8when I started in 78) we didn’t really have coyotes per se like we do now in south central Illinois. What were coyote prices at that particular time?

I was in Flagstaff AZ in 86 and 87, in 86 early hight country coyotes averaged 30 , after Christmas they realy dropped about a 15 average. Gray fox held out to about a 30 average in 86 and about half that in 87.

Can’t remember yotes but remember 70 dollar reds and 40 dollar coonsSame. I grew up in Indiana and never recall a coyote in the area. Sure cleaned up on coons and rats backs then. | | |

Mid to late '70's they seemed to average in the $35 vicinity here in upper Michigan. That's not say they didn't spike above that a time or two, around '81,'82 they shot up to $75 one winter if they had"clear white bellies".Our timber coyotes are pretty coarse, nothing like the silkies they have out west.Fox were king here price wise.

Coyotes were mostly non-existent in central & western New Yorkin the mid to late 1970's when I fox trapped both reds & greys
 around Syracuse and Canandaigua, N.Y.

There were plenty of coyote present in the northern zone N.Y. areas of
the Tughill Plateau & the Adirondacks but they were then referred to
as "brush wolves". There were really no numbers of coyote jn the
central & western N.Y. Finger Lakes region until the mid to late 1980's

Reds were $45 & greys $35 in 1976. Coon were $20 and rats were $5 nose count.

 By 1978 I was averaging $100 on Reds & $85 on Greys
at the OTA auction in North Bay, Ontario.

Coon were $45 to $50 and rats were $11 and count 'em.

In the mid 70's I worked at the local bait shop where the fur buyer would stop by once a month. We rarely seen a coyote back then so having someone bring one in was something. I recall one time two younger guys buying furs instead of the regular guy when a trapper brought one in put up. After the seller left I recall one of the buyers criticizing the other for paying $45 for that coyote.

78 and 79 seemed to be the peak if I remember correctly. Coyotes were never in demand as high as other long haired furs. Fox at $70-80, coons at $30-40. I remember selling 250 rats at $7.85 and they went up even more after that. That was about two months pay at my regular job. These were country buyer prices on the carcass. Crazy times.
The value of a dollar in 1978 is $4.72 today. So a $40 coon was worth $190 in todays dollars. But don't think you were going to go out and catch them like you can today, EVERYONE was trying to get them in every way possible, legal and illegal.

I do remember quite well my dad having a lot of robbed fur as well as traps… it’s a very good thing that my dad never caught any of them… my dad was a very large and strong man 6’2 250 pounds solid muscle,,, worked road construction and knew how to handle himself

Every road bridge had a few guys setting it and a lot more guys checking those traps. Lots of water along the MN border so rats and mink were plentiful it seemed like every field with a little standing water had a hut and a mink on it. Caught mink in a lot of dry land sets for coons in places I did not expect to catch one.

Kenny k in mid 80s I averaged $4 finished, about where they are today but less in todays dollars of course.
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.
