When I was a child I would occasionally get to go to a Sunday dinner. Usually it was served mid-afternoon. It was also considered the best meal of the week and special like a roast chicken, beef roast, pork roast and such. Do people still do this?

Sadly, I think very few people do this anymore. I think family members moving far apart is the main reason the wonderful tradition of a Sunday family dinner has ended.

Even getting together at holidays is much less common now, especially for extended families. When I was a child, around 160 people would visit my paternal great grandmother's house on Christmas and Thanksgiving during the course of the day. There was often over 100 people there at any one time. Since her death, our family has never since gotten together in similar numbers.

Since the deaths of my grandparents, I seldom see my cousins except at funerals and some weddings. I talked to one of my younger cousins a couple of weeks ago on the phone. We had a wonderful conversation. We have very similar interests and goals. We think similarly. We probably talked more in those couple of hours, then we ever did at a gathering. She being 14 years younger, we didn't interact much before our grandparents died. No longer having family get togethers made us miss out on a good friendship for a long while.

I think we all should make an effort to get together with our families. A family Sunday dinner is an excellent custom to restart.

Keith

My aunt in southern Illinois has done this forever and now her daughters are taking over at her house . Usually on the menu is chicken and dough , or some kind of roasts along with all the rest .

Thanks for answering. I have a small family and they all work 6 days + a week so its their only time off on Sunday. But we get together on thanksgiving and Christmas. A lot of families used to live in the same area for generations because of farms but that has changed a lot which certainly effects Sunday dinners.

My wife and I are fortunate that our 3 children (and their spouses) and 7 grandchildren all live within a few miles of us. Every Sunday we have dinner together at our house, summers it is outside barbeque-pool party. The rest of the time it is in our house. Grandchildren are welcome to bring their boyfriends/girlfriends but sometimes we wind up with the high school wrestling team or the girls soccer team. All are welcome. Yesterday we cooked a 15 pound meatloaf, was not much left. That was after appetizers of wings and ribs.
