Also,,the $10 charge is good for a year,,,not a one trip deal.
that isn't bad just that ours is free yours is probably so they know who is cutting more than any revenue source. at one point some hand wringer on council decided we should have to sign a liability waver first but still no charge that ended a year or two later when everyone went back to not caring.

I grew up with wood stoves and is all I’ve ever used. Even my Colombian wife is proficient at making the morning fire. Toughest thing for me is when I gave up the local newspaper subscription. Don’t have newspaper to start with anymore.
My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

At today's prices it costs me 1500 to heat with propane. I'm not cutting wood for that. There are times I would like to have a fireplace to burn some, indoor wood heat sure is comfortable Agreed. I'll stick with propane.

I too heat with wood. I have a masonry heater, most efficient way to heat with wood. No electricity required. One fire using about 50 lbs of wood/day, let it burn as fast and as hot as possible. Its reduced to coals in about 1 1.2 hrs. Give it another 1/2 hr or so when the coals are getting weak and then shut the air off. That will keep my house at an even temp with no hot spots thru out the house. I have a 2800sq ft house that uses about 2 1/2 cords/yr to keep it at 73-75.
There is some work involved with heating with wood. I don't mind it tho, and its easy when your retired an have the time. It gets me outside, gets me exercise and we don't worry about power outages. I burn maybe 2-4 gallons making a years worth of firewood. We keep about 4 years of wood already cut, split and stacked on hand.
In the rural area I live in there are quite a few guys who heat with wood and are always looking for free wood. Not much wood goes to waste around here. I’m interested in masonry heaters, did you build yours or have it professionally installed ? Any information about these is appreciated…..

some of the best fire starter is waxed cardboard boxes cut in strips with the utility knife
junk mail , the local shopper , the cereal box , the box the butter comes in , it all burns
have a tub that stuff like that goes in and start fires with it
that is mostly in shoulder season like today , house just got down to 65 after turning the oven off a while ago so I lit a fire
will load it up and go to bed and will be warm all night.

I'm going to be building a new place in a small town in WI. I don't want to deal with the new sophisticated outdoor wood boilers and had never heard of those masonry heaters. It sounds like a perfect solution for a guy like me. Leads on kits, craftsmen or dealers would really be appreciated.

The only difference is a shaker grate and a Timmerman you can set on the back to kick on even if your water temp is not low enough for the blower to come on so your coal won't go out. I put it away in the house and just burn wood.

Masonry heaters typically have a large thermal mass of brick
with a small fire box
you build a small hot fire that burns clean and the exhaust gas goes up through the large masonry path to the chimney that has passages leading to the actual flue going up and out of the house.
your small hot fire warms this large mass and it then slowly releases heat keeping form having hot then cold of simply heating the air
it works best in houses that are well insulated and built around this large thermal mass
houses with more thermal mass inside the insulation envelope naturally take longer to warm up and longer to cool down
most new houses have light weight walls , with half inch dry wall the furnace puts out a little heat for long periods of time but they cool more quickly then the furnace shuts of , they also warm more quickly when you add heat again. vs a house with actual tons , thousands of pounds of mass in the walls of plaster not dry wall.
even if you have a newer house with light weight walls but add a few tons of brick that you efficiently heat up in the middle it will radiate out that heat for hours.
the cost to build masonry heaters however is very labor heavy it is a big up front investment with slow payback in heat savings.

HEAP! Growing up on a farm, you cut/split wood or you froze. No, I'll sit my dupaw on the couch and use the HEAP voucher. You must be polish using the word dupaw which is a polish word indicating your back end or butt. I use to hear my polish grandparents using the word occasionally. Most insurance companies will insure you with a wood stove provided it meets their specifications. They will ask the agent for photos and measurements on the distance from anything flammable. Some will put a $50 surcharge on the policy. Outdoor wood boilers are no problem as long as they are a certain distance from buildings.
We are living in a world where the intelligent must be quiet so that the no common sense people won't be offended.

I used to live in a really old, uninsulated stone farmhouse. The walls were thirty inches thick. the house provided a lot of masonry mass. We heated it with a woodstove, it took forever to heat it up but after it was thoroughly warmed you could let the fire go out and the walls would radiate heat back into the house for days afterwards.
Eh...wot?

about the only thing in my house professionally installed is the wood stove and chimney I built the hearth for them to set it on that exceeded the spec needed 500 for install of the stove and chimney and it made my insurance company happy didn't have premiums go up at all.

A lot of it might be most people (ie: Wives) do not want to put up with the mess and effort required to put up/burn wood. It's a lot easier to just turn up the thermostat. Fixed it for you, and I doubt there's a steady dependable source for firewood in Nebraska. I've been heating with wood since Dec '78, and loved ever minute of it, but now at 74, it's getting harder to put up my own wood, and I can't see buying it at the prices they want.
