I usually hunt travel corridors and funnels when the wind is right but it's literally a needle in a haystack. I had two bucks on camera with very unique antlers that made them easily distinguishable. A buddy of mine caught one on his camera six miles away from where I did. The other was hit by a car last year. Same deal, about six miles away.

I have what looks to be a decent eight hitting the scrape just after legal shooting hours yesterday. Another smaller buck hit it at 2:30 yesterday afternoon. I'm going to plunk myself down there later today.

20 years ago or so and farther back before the wolves got crazy the deer were much more “traditional” in behavior and I was running many cameras being the sd chip era had gotten more dependable. Saw many more bucks and more consistency in their behavior. I do not do any food plot type things so I’m at there whim so to speak.
It was fun then knowing the odds were good if you let one pass you would see another. Quite the opposite now.

I'd love to have the deer herd I complained about as a kid. It was a big deal when someone shot a coyote back then. It would make the local paper as they were just coming into the region. We had stands of cedar the deer need for winter cover. Those have been decimated from logging. Hunters used to come up here from all over New England because this place had a reputation for monster bucks. There were decent numbers back then. Ten years ago you couldn't attract hunters this far north. Word got out there wasn't much to hunt.

On a happier note, the herd does seem to be rebounding since they went to bucks only and limited doe permits.

Deer are thick in Illinois in most counties but we don’t have the harsh winters and there is no shortage of feed

Hunting over scrapes can be dynamite but it has to be the right scrape.
There is one 150 yards out back I've hunted over for 20 plus years and have watched 100s of bucks use it.
I sat for 2.5 hours 40 yards from it yesterday and seen 6_7 buck work it.

swampgas chili and schmidt beer makes for a deadly combo

You have to remember that 1 out of 3 Democratic Voters is just as dumb as the other two.

That's encouraging. I've always enjoyed coming across scrapes but I never dedicated much time to them. I'm going to head out shortly and spend the afternoon downwind of the line I found.
