Wow that is an outstanding tribute.

I think most Americans don't have a clue about how long ago the Vietnam War, and its lessons, are now in history. Between the end of the Civil War (War Between the States) in 1865 and when FDR became president in 1933 was 68 years. The time between now and when the first major battles involving U.S. soldiers happened in the fall of 1965 is now only a decade shorter (58 years). If you view photos of President Johnson from 1965 through when he left office in early 1969, you can see him visibly age as he worried about more and more Americans dying (along with far more Vietnamese) in the war. The intractable geopolitical situation of Indochina wore Johnson out and he only lived about 4 years after leaving office. More recent POTUS' don't seem to wrestle with the same dilemma of sending Americans to fight and die in wars that have no real "game plan ending." The song gets it right, in the end the men on the ground fought for each other. You get that point in watching the fore mentioned movie 'We Were Soldiers" and fast forward 28 years later in the movie "Blackhawk Down" as well where American blood was spilled in Somalia in the fall of 1993.

History needs to be thought about on a very regular occasion because otherwise lessons learned are forgotten about and new generations have to re learn them with fresh sacrifice.I'm not a pacifist but I've studied war for 50 years and there are certainly wars that need to be fought and wars that don't.

Just a correction about Big & Rich's song and Leftlane's post about the movie "We Were Soldiers." They are about two different Vietnam War battles that happened in November, 1965. The song is about a battle fought during "Operation Hump" further south in the country against the Viet Cong (I'm sure some of their better, less bloodied units at that point) and the "We Were Soldiers" movie was about the Ia Drang campaign further north that started about a week later. November 1965 was a bloody awake up call to America what war in Vietnam was going to be.

Thanks for posting. I’ve been reading up on both the Korea and Vietnam wars. From the Chosin Reservoir to the SeaWolf pilots. Terrible wars with some fantastic and brave young men. I wish it was taught more in school.
