Did you know you can still get poison ivy in the winter?

Poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) is known for its leaflets of three and its ability to cause a painful itchy rash. What many don’t realize is poison ivy can still cause a rash in the fall and winter when it has no leaves. For this reason, it is important to be able to identify poison ivy in the winter. While a little trickier than identifying poison ivy in the summer when it has leaves, winter poison ivy identification is quite simple once you know what to look for. This video covers how to identify winter poison ivy by its persistent berries, buds, and adventitious roots.

Hope you enjoy the video! Thanks for watching, Anthony

I get it in the winter when I'm not being careful, especially during deer season. Easy to tell wild grape from poison ivy in the climbing vine stage. It's the PI growing on the ground maybe a couple feet high that will get me most often.

You can get it by burning it as well.

Worst case you ever had was in winter cutting firewood as a lad.

My brothers got it bad around eyes and neck line one time from PI smoke also.

I read a National Geographic story years ago. Apparently some scientists had a piece of moss that had been in a vacuum bottle for over 100 years , held in vacuum the whole time.

They took it out of the vacuum bottle to examine it closely. Apparently , there was some poison ivy in there too. They got the rash from handling it.

Muggins here went through the stuff with a weed whacker wearing shorts this spring. ...... That learned me to have a closer look what I am cutting first and wear long pants just in case.

Cragar - I believe it. Without air getting to it urushiol is quite stable and will last a long time.

Northof50 - Same thing can happen with deer if they have been eating it. Just handling the intact rumen can cause a rash in some people.
