The base is pretty solid and I didn't have a problem with it sliding. If it does I can always just put it against a wall. As far as keeping it up, I pretty much just placed the end against my chest or stomach which held the fur in place too. I may build a vertical support beam and will definitely have one if I build a larger version.

I have a pvc beam made out of 6"... I cut it in half length wise and rounded the nose... looks a lot like a regular beam but made out of pvc... What I don't like is that the critters slip around a lot and it slows me down... I think they "hold" better on wood... But the pvc cleans up nice and is smooth as can be...
I would go 8" to provide a "flatter" surface for the fleshing knife...

Thanks for all the comments. Think I'm going to make a 6" PVC beam too, to allow for a larger scraping area with the knife. At 4" the inner curve of the knive barely fit the contour of the pipe.

Wow, thanks for a great idea. Never heard of a PVC one before. Would at least make a good rat and mink beam.

I'm making an oak beam now. I used a jigsaw to rough it out, and I'm forming it with a sharp draw knife. So far so good. Maybe I'll post a pic of it later. Ya i used a jig saw to do the nose. but i used a table saw to make the rounded surface. i angled the blade maybe 10 degrees and ran both sides through. then i used a belt sander to take of the edges on top and to finish up the edges. it took alittle while, but good luck i would like to see how yours turns out and maybe i'll get around to posting my picture.
