Our weekend sucked big time. First time in 15-20 yrs we haven't killed at least five deer. My son killed one. that was it. 4 of us hunting and only 4 deer even seen. One of those had already been shot by someone else.

A comedy of errors I guess. The feds had been in the area cutting and spraying the russian olive for the past month. (we didn't find that out till wed.) Armadillos had totaly invaded the area, I mean they are ridiculous down there.
Had some idiot flying a drone all afternoon Friday. Had a fella lost as last years easter egg dang near walk into my blind Friday. The camp ground we were at started a controlled burn thursday night, about smoked the whole camp ground out.

I came back home friday night. I had spent 3 days scouting and couldn't find enough sign for me to stay any longer. I talked to a lot of hunters and very few had killed or even seen any deer. The camp ground was full and I don't think there was any hanging deer friday night.

Don’t know your weather but if it was like ours you left one day too early. All week we had 70-80 degrees. Friday it rained and temps dropped 30 degrees. Deer popped up like mushrooms. Now they are moving like crazy

Everyone sits on stand , these are my cousins farms that he owns and are spread out. He farms to protect habitat. I’m very fortunate to have been part of this family we got deer like this because most of the other hunters on other farms they wait for something nice or kill a doe later .
No one cares what is shot if you’re happy with it go ahead and shoot, the weather was extremely warm Friday but we still connected with 3 good bucks that morning.
One more thing about Illinois deer and turkey tags they are only good for the single county you are hunting when it is a gun season, archery deer or turkeys you can hunt that tag state wide

if she is 84 and comfortable in short pants and a blouse I think I would be getting those deer in a cooler fast not taking pictures.

probably us just being overly worried about deer temp when we don't need to be because we are used to it being sub 40 for our deer season.

It was, went into effect 1/1/23.

A little more to it than just the rifle being single shot though…must be either a 1) straight-walled cartridge of 30 cal or larger, or can be a 2) bottleneck but again must be at least 30 cal but with a case length not exceeding 1.4 in. For straight-walls the most common I’m seeing/hearing about is 45-70 govt, 350 legend and 450 bushmaster, and for the bottlenecks it’s 300 blackout. That being said, the one I’ve personally seen the most people purchase and use this year is 45-70.

Those deer were brought out of the walk in cooler just for the Sunday picture and yes we could use single shot straight wall rifles I shot a 350 legend and so did my buddy the rest were shotgun slug kills . We’ve had a walk in cooler since 1984 and they are nice they were hanging at 37 degrees till they were brought out for the picture
