Which variety of apples are best for attracting deer? Thinking of planting a few.

I would get varieties that ripen just before or during your open season. I don't think they're too picky. They love my Spitzenbergs right now....matter of fact, so do I.

Don't know the names cause they were ancient when i moved here in 1977 Do know that some start dropping around august and in a good year right thru Sept.The rest hang on longer As a matter of fact right outside my window there is a yellow variety that is still loaded with apples rather late i'd say and that is the first time i can remember seeing that

Gala's or honey crisp. early to ripen and sweet, they last well on the ground also.

There is a whole class of apples that are not so hot for us to eat, but were bred to be low maintenance and disease resistant. Two or three that come to mind are Liberty, Enterprise, Freedom and Sundance. Cummins nursury sent me an email listing those and several others, including one crab apple. The deer around these parts have hitting the crab apples almost every night. They drop late after a couple frosts and into early winter. Very little to no maintenance on the crab apples. Think previous owners planted them to be ornamental, but deer hammer em.

Turnips are even more better.

We plant every deer we shoot. Club dug a mass grave for this purpose.

Thanks for the apple suggestions. A couple of weeks ago I planted some pear trees and sawtooth oaks. At my age, I doubt I will ever see them produce, but my son and grandson should.

A friend planted 50 lbs of turnip seed this year, along with some radish. That is a lot of turnips. Says he froze 30 pints of greens. He gets seeds for free.

It might surprise you how early a young, juvenile apple tree will produce fruit. I wish I still had the picture of the tree I dubbed the Charlie Brown. It could barely handle the weight of what few apples it was bearing.

Deer seem to favor certain trees but I couldn't tell what variety they are. I have apple trees coming out the wazoo. They've spread from the original homestead plantings from 150 years ago. Moose, bear, deer and grouse hammer them and spread the seeds as they go.

The green, sour crab apples are great. In my experience deer will eat golden delicous before any red apple hands down!

a good variety of early , mid and late season might as well plant what you like to eat and have a few yourself.

this way they are bedding in and around your orchard from start of bow season through gun season

I hunted the orchard the last 2 years opening Morning and other years before with good results, it is old and overgrown and my great great grandfather would have planted most of the trees in the 1880 and 1890s through maybe the 1920s

we picked some of the apples on Friday before opener some were good crispy tart some softer and sweeter

I could hear deer chomping apples pre dawn

I only have 4 trees planted...out back for Deer
2 plumb trees out there for Turkeys 'n coon someday

next year I'm putting in Some crab trees

Planting apple trees will change the deers travel routes. I have seen it on my place. Trails they ALWAYS used are abandoned and the new trails go from group of apple trees to group of apple trees. They are like pigs headed to the trough.

Six deer this morning under my Spitzenberg tree, all does and fawns though. I know there's a couple of bucks around close too.

I have a crab apple tree in my yard. Our surveillance cameras have them eating the ones on the ground and standing on their hind legs pulling them off the tree as well.

I hunt over about a 100 apple trees. Have no idea what kind they are and I lost count how many deer I've killed over the years.The orchard Is abandon but It's still producing apples. it's better hunting after the snow falls and other food sources are gone.
I thought about planting some turnips between the apple trees but don't know If that will increase my odds In the later seasons.

I keep thinking about going in in april and trimming our overgrown orchard but I got to 1 tree so far and it is the one closest to the house

they really set heavy this year with the late rains

it looks like this , she was running right at me then bang and she flipped on her back dead all in one motion

the fall over and never get back up all the time , had a few face plant in the dirt , a summersault on a few. but this one did the flip on it's back which is a little unusual.
