The lampreys drop off the salmon when they leave the salt water to enter the freshwater rivers. They dont run themselves until late October and November and mostly under the ice.
They spawn in the mud, its probably how Jack digs them out for fishing.


Jack was probably using the young lamprey called Ammocoetes which look like the lure "twister tails" they feed on aquatic insects for several years.

When ice fishing at night light suspended under water over a rock reef that the lake trout spawned last fall is a spot the lines dont touch the bottom

Yes, Northof50 Thats what I was referring to. The small eels bury themselves in the mud and can be dug up like worms in the summer. Here we use chunks of adult eel on trotlines under ice in winter for burbot.
