For dirt-hole sets my method is to use a minimum amount of peat under the areas of the trap that contact the ground. I dig my beds so that just the jaws and levers contact the ground, the frame is suspended over the deeper hole in the middle. I sprinkle some peat in, wiggle the trap in so it's solid then add peat on top.

It seems to work. I don't have many issues with traps freezing down.

Eh...wot?

Haven’t used anything I like more than the landscape fabric.

Anyone try plastic bags ? Like you put fruit and vegtables in from the store. Very thin and no smell. I have a freeze thaw cycle, or frozen till April.

Thanks, when I would chop a hole in frozen ground it always ended up too big, I would make the dirt hole by driving a pipe in.
To stay on topic I used wax paper under traps and a crumpled piece over pan just to keep to much peat getting under. I didn’t know I go without pan cover. 9 times out of 10 my trap was still frozen in or slowed down enough that I had no catch. But lightened up the skinning chores.

I knew a guy in the fur boom days that slid every trap in an alligator sandwich bag and caught a lot of fur. I tried it too but once freezing weather came my catch went way down. Don’t know if they still make those bags but they came in a roll and didn’t take up much room in the set bucket. I used 1 1/2 coils ( no coyotes then) and they fit fine. Those fruit and vegetable bags would work great imo.

I like to get my dirt-holes made before the ground freezes hard. After hard freeze things get a lot more difficult. I dig a shallow bed the shape of the trap then pound down depressions for the levers. I like when sets made before the freeze get frozen solid. After a catch it's just "drop and lock" the set trap back in the bed and it's rock solid, very little peat needed under the trap.

The biggest issue I have is freeze/thaw and precipitation causing a frozen "pancake" in the peat over the set. It eventually gets thick enough to prevent the trap from firing. I'll go along and flip those pancakes off, check that the trap is not frozen down (they rarely are), sprinkle some more peat over and move on. The peat underneath the pancake is almost always dry.

Eh...wot?
