I have a couple of questions concerning skinning machines.

How big of a hoist would you use? I see that harbor freight has a 440 lb for 90$ and that's what it seems like every video that I have watched uses.

Also, would you guys go with a gate or roller system for a lower roof?

Is there anything else I should consider before getting into this?

Thanks in advance!

Adc would probably be a good one to answer your questions he has built many of them over the years.

That is the hoist I used. No problem with it at all.

ADC has 2 video's on this topic. I believe you might prefer the roller style.

Harbor Freight 220/440 lb hoist, and I hung it from the rafters ...I put a piece of garage door railing through it and bolted it up across 4 rafters. I used the extra pulley that you would use to compound the pulling power to allow for the controls down by my hand....it's just a pulley up top and that gave me about 8" more room / length. I bought the Base from ADC 100 years ago.

Gate or roller system is a must have on low ceilings.

PS on short ceilings... It's a good idea to put a leash on the wall so you can pull on the hide without dumping the whole contraption on top of you if your using a stand alone machine. Also tighten the bolts on the hoist and/or put a stopper bolt on the end of the square tubing.

Op do you have a cement floor? If so just put threaded anchor In the floor. Then screw In a hook.
Make yourself a cable slip noose. One end is like a noose the other end Is a fixed loop. Hang your critter by It's hind legs open It up. Place the slip noose around the tail and flank fur. Then hook up the other end of the noose to the hook In the floor. Forget about all thees bases with vice grips or roller systems or gates to hold the fur. They just limit your pulling height.
If you are really cramped for head room You can always re adjust the slip noose as you pull.

I do but I'm wanting to keep it stand alone since I may have to move it next year and will definitely need to in a few years.

Well when you want to move It just just fill the anchor holes with a flat headed bolt. Or fill them with some type of grout.

You don't need to fasten it to the floor. Just make a 2" high platform from 2X4s and 1/2" plywood big enough for you to stand on and fix your anchor to that.
