The Ontario Fur Managers Federation needs your support in preventing Environment and Climate Change Canada from increasing protections on Eastern Wolves in Canada. There is currently a proposal in the Canada Gazette ( Canada Gazette, Part 1, Volume 157, Number 45: Order Amending Schedule 1 to the Species at Risk Act) that would Federally prohibit the harvest of Eastern Wolves.

If this passes, it is extremely unlikely we will see the return of canid trapping in Central Ontario, and it could lead to further canid trapping restrictions.

The OFMF is sending a letter of opposition to this proposal and we ask that you do the same. We have attached a letter to this email for you to submit, please sign and add any additional personal comments to the letter as you see fit.

The letter must be sent to LEPreglementations-SARAregulations@ec.gc.ca by Monday, December 11, 2023.

Is this a continuation from the ANTIs fallout of what's going in the US wolf restriction deal?

OFMF have been fighting that issue for several years now provincially and had reversed quite a bit(but not all) of what the antis had done in central Ontario.
Looks like the antis have re grouped and are pushing again.
Time to stand together again and knock them back.

Here's what OFMF sent

Dear Paula Brand,

Regarding: Reassessment of Eastern Wolf

Trappers in Ontario, and Canada have been harvesting Wolves in Ontario for more than 150 years. To the testament of the true conservationist-trappers, Wolves and all Canid populations remain strong and abundant.

I have outlined my concerns below and add my request that Environment and Climate Change Canada does not move forward with the proposed Order to amend Schedule 1 of the Species at Risk Act (SARA) uplisting Eastern Wolves.

1) There is no evidence to suggest that Eastern Wolf populations are decreasing, in fact, the COSEWIC report states that they are stable. Increasing the listing of Eastern Wolves will do nothing to increase the population as it is already stable and limited by habitat, and competition with coyotes. Ontario already has extreme protections in place that are not increasing the population and adding Federal protections will do nothing but increase the administrative burden of proper adaptive wildlife management.
2) Protecting canids in the areas where Eastern Wolves are found has had negative consequences on the other species in the ecosystem. This has severely limited the ability to properly manage coyote populations which leads to increased predation on beaver, deer, moose, and a wide host of other prey species. It also reduces the populations of other predators that rely on these prey species. These factors are not being adequately evaluated or considered.
3) There are significantly negative socio-economic factors associated with protecting canids that are being ignored or downplayed. The proposal mentions the price associated with wolf pelts when talking about the socio-economic impacts on trappers, but fails to mention the coyote, beaver, and other furbearers that trappers will not be able to harvest. The proposal also fails to mention the socio-economic impact that decreasing deer and moose populations will have on the sale of hunting licenses. All of this results in less money that is available for the government to spend on wildlife conservation.

As a voter, I must insist that the Federal Government does not move forward with this proposal. Eastern Wolf populations are stable, are likely larger than the COSEWIC report suggests, and the major threat is hybridization with coyotes. The government should focus on species that actually require protections and avoid unnecessary regulatory burdens that accomplish nothing tangible.

Sincerely,
