Get the pre exposure vaccine.I got it over 30 years ago and have only needed one booster since then because of a bite. Those worried about cost,,if you claim your fur sales on your income tax(like your supposed to),,you can also claim expenitures for tax breaks,,including the vaccine.

I shot the Coon in the back and Skunk got in the bales. I called the North Dakota health dept and they said bring in the Coon and Skunk when I catch it. I caught it in a live trap the next day. I was going to drown it in the river and they said no. As the testing they do may not be accurate. I just didn't want it to spray. I took both animals to NDSU testing faculty. Its a 50.00 charge for them to be tested. They both came back negative so that was a good thing.

How does testing the coon and skunk eliminate the kitten from possibly having rabies?

I got the pre exposure shots when the rabies was raging in the coon in NY, also started wearing gloves and glasses while skinning. A guy I knew almost lost an eye when he cut a tear duct on a fox and the fluid went in his eye!

If your worried about it, get the pre-exposure series of shots, not cheap, but worth it. if you're a Veteran, they can be had at any VAMC free or low cost. You may have to argue a bit that you NEED the shots, because you handle wild animals. The Vet Rep and/or patients advocate can help.

That has never ever crossed my mind dealing with critters. Figure as long as I don’t get bit or scratched too bad I should be good to go. I did drool in my sleep the other night though.

I've been trapping for 50+ years and have never heard of anyone getting rabies, that said I wear gloves and I'm careful with the knife, but I have cut myself a time or two over the years I have always just clean the cut out good , if you are that worried maybe get the shot.

Thanks. I requested the pre exposure shots 2 days ago. Got a call this morning from a VA doctor. Asked me why I wanted them. I explained that I was trapping a variety of wild animals and wanted to be safe. He said that was certainly a good reason. We talk a little bit more. He said a nurse would call me and setup an appointment. 30 minutes later she called and I get my 1st shot Monday. It was easy. I was surprised.

As it was explained to me: The serum is kinda short lived, and they don't usually keep it in stock, they just order it as needed. The Titer level check is a fee based test, which means they take a blood sample and send it out to a lab, NOT CHEAP! I had to argue and jump thru some hoops to get them, that's where the Vet Rep and Patient's Advocate came in.

Their thought was that if the coon or the skunk had rabies then the cat would be exposed. I would have to kill the kitten to be checked.

Yes, something like 99.9% as there have been a very small number that have survived over the years.

And that would been a problem, how?
