I would like to announce the start of my Annual Trapperman Kids Art & Writing Contest!

THE PRIZES:

FIRST PLACE $100 PLUS a JoeGoodmanPrints.com prize package!
SECOND PLACE: $75 PLUS a JoeGoodmanPrints.com prize package!
THIRD PLACE: $50 PLUS a JoeGoodmanPrints.com prize package!

TO ENTER:

You must be LESS than 18 years of age and a Trapperman member or family member only. You must have your parent's permission to enter, as the winners will be asked to pm me their addresses in order for us to ship the prize packages to you. You must submit your entry no later than 9 PM EASTERN TIME ON CHRISTMAS EVE, DECEMBER 24TH. NO EXCEPTIONS PLEASE! To submit your entry, you must post a scan or good quality photo of your finished drawing or painting, as well as TYPE IN your writing or story RIGHT HERE IN THIS THREAD. YOU MUST INCLUDE YOUR FULL NAME, AGE AND STATE YOU RESIDE WITH YOUR ENTRY. Ask for help from your folks, or other members here if you have difficulty posting. This is so all Trapperman members may see and read it. Previous winners may enter again! Let's see how you've improved over the years!

THE RULES:

This year's theme is: "MY FAVORITE CHRISTMAS GIFT!!!"

FIRST, write a story that describes, "MY FAVORITE CHRISTMAS GIFT!!!" and whatever that means to you. A gift you received. OR a gift that you or your family GAVE to someone. It could be a true story, or a "made-up" story you've created in your mind. I'd like this story to be a few paragraphs minimum, if possible. I know this may be difficult for the very young contestants and we will consider this when we judge the entries at the end. Include many details to make your story interesting, who, what, where, when, why, how!?

SECOND, You must draw or paint a picture that goes with this story and illustrates it in the best possible way. It may be FULL COLOR OR BLACK & WHITE. It may be done in PENCIL, INKS, WATERCOLORS, ACRYLICS, OILS, CHALKS, CRAYONS, MARKERS, WHATEVER! Put as much effort as you can into it! I want to see what talented young folks we have here on Trapperman! Then have someone take a nice brightly lit photo or scan of it and post it here with your story!!

ONCE AGAIN, THE CONTEST ENDS AT 9 PM EASTERN TIME ON CHRISTMAS EVE !! NO EXCEPTIONS. YOU FOLKS ON CENTRAL, MOUNTAIN, AND PACIFIC TIME PLEASE MAKE NOTE!

WE WILL ANNOUNCE THEM HERE ON CHRISTMAS MORNING, SOME TIME AFTER MRS. CLAUS HAS HAD HER COFFEE…..
PM ME IF YOU OR YOUR FOLKS HAVE QUESTIONS.

WELL KIDS, I SUGGEST YOU GET BUSY!!!
AND GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL THE TRAPPERMAN FAMILY!!!

It was Christmas morning in the year 2022 my little brother had just gotten up so i carried him down stairs and we met our parents on the couch we slept in it was 10:00 half an hour later my sister comes down the stairs sleepy and tired from staying up watching movies. as soon as she sat down my little brother passed us our gifts and stockings we have a tradition where the youngest goes first so first went my little brother then my sister then finally it was my turn and i couldn't wait i dove right in to my stocking and looked at all my new stuff next i had my 12x8 plaid wrapped box. i had been waiting to open this one for 2 weeks as soon as i saw my name on it. and it was finally time to open it at first all i saw was a come stripe with the words hunting on it so i ripped it off and opened the sturdy plastic box and when i did i knew exactly what it was. the cabelas knife set for helping process deer. i was so happy i wanted to use it right away but i couldn't because at that time we were living in a town house so we took my step dads deer to the butcher. but it wasn't the gift that mattered to me the most it was the time i got to spend with my family that cold winter day.

almost 2 years later i still haven't gotten to use it on a deer of my own but i will get there eventually until then i have the memories of helping my dad cut up his a month or so ago. and all the Delicious venison we processed that day.

Mother Nature’s Christmas Present
It was a warm Christmas Day and after playing a round of disc golf with my cousin and brothers, we went in to eat Christmas dinner. It was the first Christmas after Grandpa died and we were at Grandma’s house. We ate lots of ham, rolls, potatoes, and lots of pie(Grandma’s specialty).

After eating, we decided to go fishing on Grandpa’s pond because it was so warm. Now Grandpa’s pond has lots of largemouth bass and because of this, they are all little(most are two, maybe three pounds max). I had some problems with my reel and got started late. I stepped up to the bank, and casted it straight over a log. ‘Oh no,’ I thought as I jerked on the line hoping it wouldn’t snag. My heart sank as I felt the heavy weight on the end of my line. I had snagged my line, first cast.

Suddenly, my line grew taut and began to head out. I quickly grabbed my reel and held the line as tight as I dared. Eventually it tired and I began to reel it in. It felt really heavy and was pulling really hard. I wondered if I had a turtle or maybe I was just imagining things. As I pulled it up to the bank, I realized that I had just caught the biggest bass I had ever caught, or for that matter the biggest I had never seen! My cousin quickly ran back to his house and got a scale. It weighed in at exactly five pounds. I let it go and I hope I see that one or a bigger one some day.

My first favorite Christmas present

It was Christmas day at my family's trapping cabin and it was very busy. I always wanted a .22 of my own to hunt small game. When we were almost done opening our presents there was one left and it had my name on it. I frantically opened it and saw it was a S&W M&P AR .22 rifle in the box!

Instantly I asked my dad if I could outside and shoot it. "After you eat your breakfast" he said. I ate my breakfast as fast I could but not too fast, so I didn't look like an animal. After Breakfast I ran outside with my gun on my back and some ammo in my pocket. I waited for my dad to catch up with me at the shooting range and set up the target. After my dad sighted in the gun, I started to blast the target.

I could hit the target but I was not a good shot. I took alot of small game with that gun, it was one of the best Christmas gifts I got.

Once upon a time on Christmas day. I woke up and started down the stairs, my ma is sitting in her rocking chair sewing up a storm, my brother is on Trappersman, and my pa came inside and told me to put on my coat and go outside to the barn. I hurried to the barn, and I found an Arabian horse standing inside.

I never saw such a beautiful brown coat and a golden-brown mane glimmering in the candlelight. I knew pa wanted me to do a test run on the horse, so I raced through the wide road. Later that day I found out it was a girl and so I named her chocolate because of her brown coat.

My horse's favorite thing to eat is carrots and apples but apples mostly. Pa said that Arabian horses are for racing, but i never raced before. I told pa that she slows down all of the time when I ride her. Pa said that she might have dirt in its frog, so I cleaned it out. Pa took my horse to get her shoed, pa said it protects her feet. He came home an hour later with chocolate and a saddle, stirrups, reins, and a bit. The next day I woke up and ate breakfast, I didn't see ma, so I went to the barn to feed chocolate. I saw ma braiding chocolate's tail and mane! "She looks fantastic" said.

Ma said she has to look good to be my horse. I was lucky to have a great family i thought. Later that day I went outside to feed the horse and ride her for awhile and put her in the barn, ate dinner and went to bed. I thought chocolate was the best christmas present ever!

There are actually two Prestons entered in this contest. I believe the one without the picture showing is the other Preston.

Your picture is fine.

The best Christmas gift I ever received actually came from Old Saint Nick from the North Pole. In fact, here is the story of when it all began...

It all began on a cold Christmas eve night when I woke up to something ever so slowly slip down our chimney. Cautiously, I crept out of my bed and down the stairs. That was the very night I met Santa in his fluffy red and white
suit with the pompom on his hat. Santa looked at me with a jolly glimmer in his eye. Now don't get me wrong, but Santa didn't look how you would imagine him to look. He still has a big beard and is all jolly and has white hair, but he was young and not so plump.

He gently said, "If you want any presents you have to go back to bed.''

I didn't take any chances-I went straight back to bed!
The next morning I ran downstairs. But to my great disappointment there was only one lonely present under the tree. There wasn't even a name on it. I ran into my mom and dad's room and said, "Mom, Dad! There is only one present and I think it's my fault! I awoke to Santa coming down our chimney. I think I made him mad."

My mom replied, "Don't worry, Tommy. When you were a baby Santa did the same thing. You said he left only one large gift?"

I nodded, this was the biggest present I'd ever seen!

My dad said, "Let's go open it!"

We all went and opened it. I couldn't believe what it was! We unwrapped a tent, fire starter, traps, and a turkey, raccoon, fox, and coyote caller. Over the next couple of weeks our whole family went out camping and trapping. I never would have thought trapping could be so much fun! We went swimming, we told stories, we wrote funny poems, and trapped three fox, two raccoons, six squirrels, one coyote, and we called in five turkeys. We had so much fun! I laugh just thinking about it. Eventually though, we got hungry and I got sick, so we had to go home. We still go trapping every once in a while, but that very first time when I got that wonder full gift will always be my favorite. Santa often leaves one large gift for our family. All of them have been trapping related... which has me wondering... will I grow up to be a pro trapper?!?
…that is the story of my best Christmas present ever received. THE END

One Christmas I wanted a toy car and I got one! But I also wanted a toy phone.
So I wrote a letter to Santa.
He got my letter and I got it! And I was happy.
The end.

One Christmas, I wanted a new oilskin jacket to go trapping with my dad. I wrote a letter to Santa, it said’ “Dear Santa, I would like a new oilskin jacket.” And he received my letter!

On Christmas Day, I opened up my present and it was my oilskin jacket! And it was the best Christmas present I ever had.

Christmas is tomorrow, and I haven't decided what I want yet. I mean, there is so much, but find interest in little. I scroll through Amazon, nothing. I walk through the mall, nothing.
I stared at my stocking hanging above the fireplace. My stocking isn't one of those boring ones. It had bows and purses on it. Doesn't help. I wander around the house, waiting for an idea to hit me. Suddenly, I hear yelling. I run over to the widow to find my mom out by the tractors, running in circles, trying to get away from a rabid raccoon. I can't help but laugh. I jump away from the window with the best Christmas present idea. I could get traps, lures, baits, a hammer, sifter, and knives. I could start a new hobby! I live on a ranch in Kansas, and I have plenty of area to trap. This could be the start of a new life, helping the world. Mom won't get chased by rabid raccoons with the future best trapper living in her house.
I list all I need on a piece of paper and give it to a dove to bring to Santa..... No, sadly, that's not what happened. I just put it in the mailbox at the end of the driveway. Hopefully, Santa gets it in time. If he doesn't, hopefully he knows I don't like dolls.
Well, there goes dad, screaming too. I speed walk back to the house before the raccoon sees me as well.
I wake up early, running down the long flight of stairs. I walk into the living room where there are a ton of presents.
Mom and dad come downstairs yawning. I tare open presents and find just what I wanted. Traps, sifters, hammers, and knives all to myself. I head outside with all my stuff, put tags on the traps, and start setting.
Merry Christmas. And a Happy New Year!

To all that have already entered well done No matter the outcome you need to practice your skills to improve And that means you practice against the best in order to learn what you need to get better att And some day you might just find yourself at th top with the rest trying to catch you It could be you are the winner but trying is the only way to know .

The best gift I received

The best gift I have ever received is my bow. I got it 2 years ago, and I got it from Santa. When Christmas came, Santa came down my stove pipe through my stove and into my house. We always leave cookies and milk and carrots for the reindeer. One year I left Mountain Dew for Santa and one time I made reindeer food.

On christmas morning I woke up at like 5:00 in the morning and woke up Emily, who is my sister and John he is my brother. Then we go down stairs and go through our stocking. Then we go wake up our mom and dad. We can't open our presents until my mom and dad have had their coffee.

Then we opened the presents that our mom and dad got us. I had got my first knife in one of my presents that year. Later that day we went up to our grandma and grandpa's house. We eat lunch and play games at their house with our aunts, uncles, and cousins. If it is nice out we will play basketball. My grandparents have cows and they have hay bales and one time we played tag on the hay bales, it was really fun.

Later when we get home we put everything we got in our rooms, take a shower and brush our teeth and then go to bed. I woke up in the morning and went outside and play with everything I got. THE END

I'm glad I don't have to judge this. I'd have a rough time doing it.

The best gift I ever gave to someone is a rideable tractor I made. But let me go back a few years to when my cousin Camden was born. By the time Camden could walk he had a never ending love for trucks. His dad was a mechanic so like *big shocker*. His third birthday was February 2 and it was November 13 so I knew I needed to hurry. So in my bed that night I made plans for it. The next day I went out to the barn and set to work. I started with a large 2x1’ box then… I figured out that if I put the seat on the box it would look really weird. So I took a 3’ long piece of 2x4” and put it on bottom of the box so that it stuck out on 2’ on one side. Next I stacked up six boards on the other side of the 2x4’’.I then cut out some rounded boards and made the seat. I then made 4 wheels 1 of which was broken so I braced it with 2 circular boards. I also made a few accessories including: a steering wheel, a speedometer, a light switch, a throttle and gear sifter lever, and exhaust pipe. Then I asked my dad for some spray-pant started spraying. I managed to paint it all perfectly, definitely not giving the shop floor a little green Christmas-cheer. In the end I was really happy with the outcome. But there was just one problem… it was November 19 .wow. I waited until Christmas Eve at a family gathering and brought Camden and his parents out to the driveway where the tractor was propped up on one wheel. Camden immediately hopped on and rode it down the driveway, barley missing a tree and sailing into the neighbors’ yard. Cam was so excited I think this is going to be a Christmas Camden remembers for a long time! Thanks for listening and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The End

It all started in a fairly populated area where a boy named Christian lived with his foster parents. His family was nothing like him and had none of the same interest as him. They were a very neat and proper family who lived in an upper class neighborhood. Christian had lived with this family for about 6 months now while he waited to find a permanent family. Both of his parents died in a car accident 15 months ago, right before he turned 14. He had been in and out of foster homes every couple months waiting till a family wanted him forever. While he was living with the Baileys he had the opportunity to go to a private academy. He loved it there and had a few good friends. The only downside to going to a private school is none of the kids were like him. They all came from upper class families and didn’t have the same interests as him. Christian had a huge love for the timber, just being in the timber brought an amazing amount of joy to him. It all started when he was younger..

His dad grew up trapping with his father and would always tell Christian the adventures he had been on. John his father was never able to take Christian to do those things due to him always having to work to provide for his family. His mom had many health problems and was home bound since Christian was 7. That was how his parents died, they were rushing to a hospital because the doctors needed to complete an urgent procedure. His dad was speeding and accidentally ran a redlight and got hit by a semi truck. After his parents had their accident Christian found his gift they were going to give him on his birthday. It was a book titled Woods Runner by Gary Paulsen, Christian cherished that gift and read it all the time. It made his urge to be out in the woods even stronger. Everyday, day and night he would pray that he would get chosen by a family who lived the same life his father had done. A family who focused on the simple things in life, loved nature, hunting, and trapping.

He didn’t know it but, that dream came true on November 28 , he had been informed he had been chosen by this family to be adopted by them. Christian was beyond ecstatic to have a forever family before he knew anything about this family. All he knew is that they wanted him, they wanted him! He got to visit his new family, the Jenkins, the whole ride there he couldn’t sit still. When he got there he immediately had the feeling of home. It was a medium sized, white farmhouse, with a red barn, and chickens pecking the ground in front of the porch. A man walked out and came up to Christian and shook his hand.

“Pleased to meet ya boy, the names Sam and I’m assumn’ yer Christian?” he said while giving me a firm handshake. One firmer than I’ve ever felt from anyone.

“Yes sir, that’s me that’s a mighty fine hat you got on there” I replied to hopefully my new dad. He was wearing a very finely made raccoon pelt hat with the tail hanging off the back.

“Oh yeah this old thing, I caught this one a few years ago and my old hat was fallin’ apart and needed replaced.”He led me in the house to introduce me to his wife Martha who was standing at the stove cooking what smelled like to me venison. Their house was pretty much exactly how I pictured it to be. Hardwood floors, very dark woodsy colors, animal mounts, and hides covering the walls leaving very few bare spots. I knew this was meant to be my home, everything about it all seemed perfect.

Today is the day I will hopefully be able to live forever with the Jenkins. It was December 2, Christmas was in about a month and this was the best gift in my entire life, besides the books my dad left for me. I packed my suitcase full of all the things I had taken to all my homes. Clothes, hygiene items, all the basic necessities of life, and my book. I couldn’t forget my book that was one of the last things I had left of my parents. When I got to the house Sam and Martha were standing out on their porch and came out to meet me when I got out of the car. Sam helped grab my suitcase and carry it inside for me. When I got inside for the second time of my life I knew I would be walking through this door many more times. The smells of freshly fried potatoes and steak hit me when I had taken a few more steps into the walkway getting closer to the kitchen.

For the next couple of days Sam pretty much just helped me get my room organized and get me settled. During that time he kept asking questions about me just to get to know me better. It felt amazing to know someone cared about me enough to actually get to know me. Sam would occasionally ask me questions about things I wanted but never had the opportunity to do. I told him the first thing that came to mind was to be able to trap a muskrat. Telling Sam that made me feel a little silly due to the fact he had probably trapped many muskrats during his life.

It was now Christmas morning and I’m laying upstairs waiting to hear if mom and dad were up yet. It feels really weird to call them that but, that's what they are to me now. When I first started hearing footsteps across the hall I got up and got cleaned up before breakfast. I got down to the bottom of the stairs and saw something sitting at my seat at the table. It was a trapping basket with a coon tail hat, some beaver mittens and a few 110 conibears inside. I stood staring into the basket in disbelief until Sam came up behind me.

“When you said you wanted to be able to trap a muskrat I knew I would be able to make that dream come true.” He said as he put his hands on my shoulders.

“I can't believe you would give this all to me. This is the most special thing anyone has ever given to me!” I replied as I turned around to give Sam a hug. He hugged me back and I immediately felt like I was 7 again hugging my very own dad. It brought a lot of sadness to me but also brought so much joy.

“I planned on maybe after your ma made breakfast, me and you could go out on the creek and make a few sets.” Sam said as he walked around the table to his seat.

That weekend of trapping muskrat Christian and Sam harvested 10 muskrat on the creek. It was the first of many times they spent trapping together. It almost became a tradition to go trapping on Christmas Day. Even if it was freezing cold they managed to at least go make one set. That tradition lived on when Christian would bring his own children to visit their grandparents for some good cooking, memories with family, and of course trapping.

My favorite Christmas gift is giving to the less fortunate. The drawing I drew was to show what the true meaning of Christmas is. The true meaning of Christmas is to celebrate the birthday of our savior, Jesus Christ. Lately it has felt that Christmas has become more about me receiving gifts rather than giving. At my school we do an annual change drive to raise money so that the school can donate gifts to the less fortunate families in our community. This year me and my sister got very involved because our teachers taught us the importance of giving to those that are less fortunate. A very important part to me was that these are my classmates or people I have known my entire life that are struggling and may not receive Christmas gifts like I do.

The change drive reminded me that Christmas is not only about getting the presents I want but remembering that Jesus Christ was born on Christmas and that is the true meaning. Knowing that Mary and Joseph faced a lot of hardships throughout the pregnancy and even the fact that Jesus was born in a manager and not in an inn continues to show the hardship. While the families in my community do live in their houses, they do not have everything that they may need like clothes, coats, boots, or other necessities. They are going through their own hardships in life and may just need a little help. My older sisters have also been involved in the change drive when they were in high school and have talked about the fact that most of the presents were necessities like clothes and that these kids were not just getting toys.

While I am super excited to open my gifts on Christmas and see all of the items my friends and family bought me. I thought it was important to remember that Christmas is about the love and hardship that is shown through the life of Jesus Christ. That everyone in this world goes through hardship and around holidays that can be even more difficult. I think that my faith has influenced how I look at Christmas now and that things aren’t always like they may seem. Some of my friends may be going through hardship and I don’t even know it, which is why the change drive became so important to me. To wrap this up I hope that everyone has a Merry Christmas and can spend the holidays with their loved ones.

Mr. Goodman, Grace is thrilled and sends her thanks! Attached is a photo I found of yourself and my family at a convention. Grace is the shortest of the bunch. She has grown a bit since the photo. God bless you and your family.

Congratulations to the winners and great job to ALL the contestants.

I really enjoyed Codyewd's story, it was great. You should keep writing Cody, I can definitely see your articles being published in the trapping magazines some day. Who knows, you might even become a famous author.

Coalcreekkid's gun drawing was awesome too!

He is greatful for the encouragement. Thanks again.
