The 6PM news today went on and on about the move to impeach Sniffy and how they have no proof but I don’t remember them saying anything about the Russia hoax lacking proof or the proof on the laptop being mentioned. Clearly the MSM has an agenda to follow when they comment on conservative issues but are silent when the leftist are under the gun.

This is obviously the thing we all fear, and rightly so. However, I don't disagree with the notion that internet algorithms are dangerous and for many of the reasons that Mr. Gore stated. They tend to trap people in bins or silos, patterns of thought and behaviour that are often unhealthy or unrealistic, or at the very least, extremely limited. There is little chance that people can escape those patterns or broaden their mental horizons (and therefore increase their ability to act wisely in a complex world), because they only ever interact with content that they like or agree with. Mr. Gore's solution of government control is obviously a solution that a good government official would offer, and it's a bad one for obvious reasons. The underlying assumption (for Mr. Gore and everyone who disagrees with him) is that democracy (in the broad sense -i.e. government "by the people") depends on people being well-informed so that they can make good decisions. We would be quick to point out that an environment where information must be government-approved does not produce well-informed citizens. It produces easily-controlled citizens. However, I think we should also be wary about "non-MSM". (side note: what amount of people have to be getting information from non-mainstream media before non-mainstream media becomes mainstream media?) Just because your content isn't coming from a traditional source doesn't mean that it's unbiased, free, fair, and/or balanced. Internet content is mediated to us by corporations that are profiting from keeping our attention. The more time we spend interacting on any platform or service, the more money they make. They will maintain your attention by producing content that you love (or love to hate), and the algorithms will lead you to consume more, similar content. We may like to think that we're choosing our own digital paths, getting good content that hasn't been spoiled by government or "mainstream" influence. We've thrown off those old foreign, arbitrary powers! But the truth is that we've just traded those arbitrary powers for the arbitrary powers of a digital corporate economy. Just because the government isn't controlling us, doesn't mean we aren't being controlled. Anyone with experience in advertising can tell you exactly how this works. As much as we like to think we're all intelligent and free-willed, the reality is that we're gullible and easily manipulated. I know I just offered you all a heaping spoonful of pessimism, and I wish I could offer a great solution. I can't, but I think step one might be realizing that we are being manipulated and trying to see where and how. Maybe if we can begin to see through all that, we can start to see whatever nuggets of truth might be behind the curtains.

I would never support banning anything (speech, religion, guns, drugs, etc.). But, social media, YouTube commenters, gifs and memes have made the average American much less informed. The worst part is that they think they are informed.

The same goes for 24 hour MSM news.

People are being deceived. I see it here every time I check in on Tman.
