Great coon, around here it's hard to get one without yellow on the back of his neck unless it's about all black.

I feel like I’ve never got a yellow’d raccoon….I think maybe it’s cause we don’t have real cold winters anymore around here. Not enough to put them in a torpor. By this weekend it’ll be in the mid 50’s. Wet and sloppy. What I wouldn’t give for a big fat snow

Nice color I never liked the yellow always have preferred the blue coon, I was told the reason for the increased popularity of yellow coon was the fur could be blended into other fur easier, maybe someone who’s in the fur market will confirm or deny this.

Here, our Coon don't seem to get " yellowed up " till mid, later winter.
Nice catch. Love your enthusiasm!

Everyone says to leave coon overnight and let them “firm up”. I’ve seen that to be true with the fat. Strange how that works. So the big old cow is still in the bed of my truck and I’ll tackle it after work tomorrow…

Sometimes I can’t believe that I’m doing it. And it is very small scale. But I’m still excited. I wish my Pap was here to see me! We were best pals! I was always in the garage with him; cracking walnuts in a vise. Cooking hot dogs on foil on top the pot bellied stove. He trapped as a young man but by the time I showed interest he was long gone.

As for skinning I always did them fresh. Of course having a meat market they needed to be processed promptly.
Going to set some coon traps for the grandkids to check this weekend. I'll post a picture of a yellow coon. lol
