I love that sound. Woodcock are erratic in flight, that's what makes them tricky to hit. For you guys who've never had the opportunity to hunt them, it's "flights" you're hoping for. Woodcock migrate at night and light into cover at dawn. A cover that had no birds one day can have thirty the next. They hold incredibly tight. I've seen my pointer with his head cocked eying a bird two feet away. Not a good habit for the dog.
