The pheasant would be a B-52, woodcock an A-10 and grouse an F-15. Think that's close?

I can't believe that cop put me in the back seat when I clearly called shotgun.

Woodcock is more akin to a M16A2 antipersonnel mine aka "bouncing betty" mine. Popping up to about head height from directly under foot.

You ain’t kidding! Used to hunt over some Brittany’s when I was teenager. Had one point and we went in to flush and nothing. The other dog had moved on and so did we. I looked back and that dog hadn’t moved. I called and he still didn’t move. I was now getting a little ticked and went in and grabbed it by the muzzle. When I grabbed him a dang buzzsaw went off right in front of that dogs nose and hit the brim of my hat and scared me almost to the point of needed and new pair of skivvies. I swear that dog looked at me with disgust and rolled his eyes before running to catch up with the other dog.
We eventually killed one of those little birds before the day was over and still argue to this day as to who hit it.

Never had a bird dog of any type just kicking them up in creek bottoms. Good exercise for the old ticker, lol. Quit that nonsense when I gave myself the worst "frog" ever. Threw up the 20ga single shot on one zig zagging through the trees and touched it off about an inch away from my bicep. Who says 20s don't kick, lol.

Those birds have built in radar and terrain avoidance processors in them somewhere.

If government developed them, they came straight out of Area 51.

They are and they aren't. An individual bird comes up head high or so and sails off a a few dozen to a hundred yards and sets down. BUT, a covey rise might have a dozen doing it all at once going in all directions all originating from the same point. That and they aren't much bigger than a tennis ball. Think noisy explosion and you've got to pick out just one bit out of the chaos and disregard the rest.

We have a gentleman that comes every year shooting a .410 and dropping doubles on wild birds. He’s one of the very few that can hit wild quail consistently.
I’ve had to remind him the way only way to be invited back is to miss every now and then, lol.

I've seen Dad knock down two at once with a 410 but that was shooting into the covey rise and he only did that once by luck.

But consistent doubles with a 410 is world class shooting. I can't consistently hit one with a twelve, lol.

I doubt I could pull the trigger on one today as they are so uncommon now in most places. I miss hearing them and seeing them. As a kid we always had several coveys around the house. They're all gone now.

You are truly fortunate to have wild birds. I would enjoy tagging along just to know some still exist.

Never killed one. It takes too long to pick my gun back up every time a covey all jumps up at once.

Isn't there a small chopper the vets call the little bird? Quail are my fav bird to hear, hunt, or serve for supper.

I don’t know if there’s anything called “heart attack” or “the grim reaper” but that how I feel every time I’m walking to the deer stand and bust a covey up. I’m “ok” behind dogs, but not knowing they’re there will test your bowel and kidney capabilities.

Spruce grouse are protected here and I don't see many of them. I can't say I've ever seen one fly.
