Yes it was a bit chilly this morning compared to most the past few weeks. Pulled most of my mink and weasel boxes yesterday due to flooding. Glad I did as single didgets last night with strong North winds kept all but the most hardy critters in bed. Still managed to pick up two deer mice from my weasel boxes and one very skinny raccoon. She is all skin and bones and doesn't look good. Would be easy fleshing but decided she would be better off in the burn pile. Good day to stay inside and put up fur (not the mice though).
Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

Hello everyone. I have been stalking this site for a while now trying to soak up the knowledge from you old trappers out there. This will be my second winter in the interior of Alaska after moving from Alabama. I have a remote property of 5 acers that I own and am just starting out on a very small scale to try my hand at catching marten and fisher. I currently have 5 pole sets out with #120 conibears, using grouse carcasses for bait and the stinkiest marten lure available to me. Lows have been dipping down to -40F and to say I am super stoked to begin my first trapping would be an understatement. Wish me luck and any tips you could send my way would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Check out the Wilderness Trapping forum. It's most all Alaskan and Canadian trappers. Tons of Alaska trapping info, pictures, how to stuff.

The wolves were through here this morning so the coyotes and cats should be behind them tonight. I have my fingers crossed for the big Male I have seen around the house here.
I have nothing clever to put here.

Rick or anybody. I had mentioned a tree I have in the woods behind the house a couple of years ago. Where I followed a big bobcat track to where he was scratching on it like a domestic cat does. I happen to check that tree out last weekend and to my surprise that tree is really scratched up now. With no snow I can't say when the last time it was worked over but it does look fairly fresh. In the past I have set bobcat sets not far from this tree but with no luck. Do bobcat mark there territory or is this a place that they come by once in a while to check out. This weekend I am putting up a camera to see how long it takes for him or they to return. Any ideas people??? I have never seen such a tree but have to ask why you are putting a camera and not a #3? It sounds like a cat magnet. With a little work I bet you could choke down a couple of spots for a foothold.
I have nothing clever to put here.

There is a strip of high ground approximately 75 - 80 yards from there that splits a lake and a swamp that I have 2 different sets on. Easy to cover, the strip is maybe 60 feet wide with 2 game trail coming through there with a walk through cubby on both trails. Every time a cat comes through is from that area. Years ago I have snared 2 big cats there. But that was years ago. No such luck lately.

Could you put in a bait pile somewhere reasonably close to that tree?

Could you put in a bait pile somewhere reasonably close to that tree? I could, never tried that in this area. It is the same spot I usually catch my fisher just about every year. Every critter travels this area so never put a pile here for that reason. I do have buckets of beaver meat.

I wonder if you could block the tree just a little and use a gland lure on the tree. I would LOVE to see a picture of the tree. I have heard many old timers talk about finding "cat toilets" and taking cats from there every year. In all my years in the woods I have never found one.
I have nothing clever to put here.
