Sold some fur to Petska yesterday. $15/lb for beaver, and $2/$4/$5 for raccoon based on size. Made enough to buy myself a new gun, so I'm happy. Cool. What ya getting. A guy can never have too many.

$15 a pound ? never sold by the pound can you enlighten me as to what sizes were? And maybe average per size? I'm no expert, but my understanding is that they're sold by the pound for the hatter market. I don't know what sizes they'd be when measured out, I just nail them to a sheet of plywood in an oval shape, no pattern used. They were anywhere from 20 lbs to 50lbs beaver.

I know that in the hatter market they buy by the pound but never heard anyone in the country doing it. That's a first for me. So how did you know the price was exceptable ? I assume they scaled them for you to see the weight.

Do you know how many beaver it was and what the avg weight per beaver was? That would be more meaningful for most of us beaver guys.

does anyone know if $15 a pound average is good? what is the dried weight of different size beavers? I never weighed a dry beaver. Always sold them by the yardstick.

$14 per pound is what I sold for last season. $15 is about right considering the “slight up-tick” in the market. Really hard to state a size=weight. Weight isn’t really something you can judge with a ruler. I individually weighed several skins. They had wide variation in weight despite size being about the same. Late season hides were much heavier in fur and leather density. I can say that my 50lber averaged about 2.5lbs, which was about $36-$37 average for that size.

Good ol' Don Wolf to the rescue. I've weighed some over the years and that sounds just about right. I think my average weights were around 1.8 lbs.

Unless the market went down in the last couple days it's not. I talked to a guy I've sold to the last couple years about 10 days ago and he's at $19/lb.

Sounds right on weights...wasn't a comment on price. All my blankets fetched $40 on the second sale last year at FHA.

It wasn't but a few years ago, beaver was selling at $9/lb is you were luck. How fur was baled in the early years, size didn't matter, by weight: Fur press: Museum of the Fur Trade
