One of my two was a BDL grade with the Monte Carlo stock, nicer wood and basket weave checkering.

since the front sights are screwed on now there is no reason a smith couldn't cut and crown any of the much more common longer ones down to carbine length. if you found one at a good price.

a factory carbine in your desired caliber might be a rare duck indeed.

I believe the Basketweave pattern was made from 68-72. My Dad and I each had one. I got rid of mine years ago but he still has his.

Has anyone else found a problem with the length of pull being too long on the 760/7600?

That sounds right. Both of mine had the See-Thru scope mounts that were popular back then. I think I paid around $250.00 for mine in the late 70's, early 80's. Wish I still had them.

Fourteen inches seems to be the American standard for LOP. I just bought a Model 94 with a 13 1/8" LOP. Too short for me but a slip-on Pachmayr recoil pad brought it to 14"s on the button. Perfect for me. I'm 5' 10".

I thought the 760 in .30-06 that I shot had an abnormal amount of recoil.

7600 30-06 that is very accurate, slick handling, awesome deer drive bear drive gun. sits in the attic with other neglected American awesomeness

No, but then I grew up using my dad's from the time I was nine years old, so I probably unconciously compare the length of pull of every other gun I ever shoot to that. Did yours have a recoil pad? They came with an aluminum buttplate and if someone replaced that with a recoil pad it would make the length of pull longer.

I grew up using my dad's 760 in 270, even though I got my own bolt gun when I was 12, I grabbed my dad's pump whenever I could. I found one just like his about fifteen years ago that a friend was willing to sell and bought it. It had a much harder trigger pull and I ended up replacing the hammer spring, which made it much better. I own quite a few rifles, but to this day if something jumps up in front of me and takes off running, that is the gun I want in my hand. My dad bought his used when he was 12 years old, and he is 68 now. Finally retired it last year and bought himself a 300 mag. Between the two of us that gun killed an awful lot of deer, bear, and elk.

By the way, mine isn't a tack driver, but it will shoot under 1.5 MOA,with the right loads. I worked up a load for my dad's that would consistently group an inch and a half at 350 yards. Way better than a pump is supposed to be able to shoot.

I always wanted a carbine model, I know a couple people who have them (in 30 06) but they aren't willing to part with them.

no mine is 13 even to the back of the aluminum but plate it is a little short but I manage

the butt stocks on the 740 74 742 7400 4 6 76 760 7600 are all the same just checkered differently

I don't think that's correct. If you do a bit of research you'll find fourteen inches advertised as the standard LOP. Fourteen inches is probably the most common LOP on American made guns out there.

Fourteen inches is fine for me. Mine must have been more like fifteen, and maybe it did have an added butted; I don't recall.

Oh, yeah: and the trigger sucked. Way too heavy and creepy.

I have some. I enjoy shooting them, find they are accurate enough for normal distances. I am fond of the carbine model and always looking to add more. Good for big critters or little.

I have a Remington 760 that I bought brand new fall 1969. Chambered in 30 - 06 . 18 1/2 inch barrel . $135.00 with box of shells. Put a Williams receiver sight and sling used several years. Eyes got old and put a scope on it . still use it. It has served me well.

There is a facebook group that is just the 760 s. Look it up.

My brother had a carbine in 30.06 It was a nice looking gun and was great to carry But as a young skinny teenager when I shot it which quickly became less and less it got meat on both ends I never shot a gu that produced more recoil And I would be flinching frim the recoil by the third shot when shooting at the range

I had the same rifle. It was very reliable. i wanted a semi-auto. I traded it in on a 762 BDL deluxe specially made for a left handed person. It had a left handed safety and a left handed cheek piece, 30-06 caliber. I was one of a kind. Still have it. It has killed a bear, lots of deer and elk. And a couple wild hogs.

Correction: My semi-auto is a 742 BDL Deluxe, not a 762.
I knew the 740 had quite a few issues, but the later 742 remedied some of those. Only problem I'd ever had with it was once a broken extractor.

Also one of my deer hunting partners had one in a 280 Rem. I was asleep at the wheel I suppose because he sold it to someone else other than me At the tme I had a Ruger M77 IN THE 280 caliber It was a really nice shooting gun Of course one was a pump and the other was a bolt But I carried my Ruger M77 280 more than all of the other deer rifles I ever had And it was just a real nice deer caliber And I will admit that the 270 ,243, 30.06 3087MMall are surer deer killers also However I do not have any numbers to know for sure but I would guess the Rem 760 in the 280 Rem was one or the lower calibers sold in the 760 model So that makes it a little different .
