i would think in a situation where you got a sheep killer, you would just do all night stakeouts from long range with a thermal, no calling. Gonna be a lot of long nights

Long range and thermal don’t belong in the same sentence.

And even if they did (they don’t), how do you cover 4-6 section pastures with a rifle?

You don’t.

Right conditions and top of the line thermal you can get out there quite a ways . Dropping serious coin for scopes that can do that, over 3k.

Like I said a lot of long, long nights or hope you guess the right pasture the first time

Ok, I’ll bite.

What’s long range? We should probably define that first.

And have you witnessed these long range thermal shots?

I have a pretty “top of the line” setup. I also shoot a fair bit of long range (in the daytime). And I’ll tell you, you aren’t doing any “long range” work with it except maybe a pure luck Hail Mary.

200 yards in a LONG way in darkness. I have used and owned Trijicon IR Hunter. That 1 ant cheap. Even on the day. 300 yards. Is a ton!!! Just because - new thermals have = 3000 yards detection range. Does mean you can make a 1000 yards shot on a coyote ! Boone ELR is fun.
375 Cheytec imp. 404 gr lathe turn bullet at 3200 fps out a 40 inch barrel. Nightforce 5.5x22x56 MLR. With Tacoma Charlie. Shooting rocks out to 3616 yards. Verified with Vector 4 rangefinder. Bout 7 seconds flight time. LOVE IT !!! LoL!

Around here anything over 100 yards is long range maybe not so much out west

Depending on condition? Food supply, competition from other trappers, and population.
Fewer coyotes generally means less competition for food and territory, therefore the coyotes may be less aggressive working sets. If you have a good pray base then this makes them less aggressive. Throw in competition and now you have spooks.
