Add in the humidity and it even gets the mountain west folks a shivering. About 3 inches of snow on the ground and a balmy 20 degrees now.

You got that humidity part right J Staton. Had a friend out from Long Island New York hunting here at -2 a few yrs back.
Said it was the coldest he had ever been in his life, Lol.
Remember another time hunting with him in W. Texas at a balmy 2 degrees, and the locals went into hibernation....Seems like we were the only ones crazy enough, and pretty much had the panhandle to ourselves that day.

Code for burying water lines is eight inches over most of the deep south if any code at all. You can imagine how the houses are insulated. Standard 2x4 stud, 1/2 osb sheathing, house wrap, kraft backed fiberglass, sheetrock is standard fare. Water lines should, but often don't, enter below grade. Crawlspace has water lines running under the joists on hangers. Almost never insulated joist bays and ground vents open year round. Basements never heated. Attics always ventilated soffit, gable, ridge and fan. Some newer construction runs water through attic, go figure. Spray foam gaining popularity for retrofit and some high end new. Last bad cold snap to hit Atlanta had fire response compromised due to loss of pressure in the lines once things thawed.
