Makes an impression like this?
[Linked Image]
It's 6' long and has no signs of having feet.
Those are deer tracks going through it and turkey buzzard tracks above it
It looks like it walked on it's wing elbows. If that is what they are called
But why?

A raptor of some sort catching prey. You can see the initial feet forward wings back strike to start then a hop or two then the wings forward as it dispatches.

Small hawk would be my guess.

No sign of any pray of any kind in the snow

And from farther back

It was cold and windy here, I was thinking frozen feet

I’d say this^^. Small mouse or shrew may not leave sign on hard snow.

Fluffy powder it's been cold here
This field was planted in some new soybeans that the animals don't like, not even the squirrels.
It's made this field almost barron of animals tracks in the snow except for the ones just passing through on their way to somewhere else

I'm with the other guys in knowing it was a raptor making a catch. The lack of tracks might mean that the prey was burrowed under the snow and just popped its head out there. If it was an owl catch, it may have been completely burrowed under when it got taken out- those things have amazing ears and purdy good aim.

The PBS Nature series has videos of owls punching through the snow, to grab meadow voles and then immediately flying off. The tracks match up perfectly for that.

If it wasn't a pterodactyl I'm going with an owl grabbed a small rodent.

I will have to watch for that Keith.

I once saw a small falcon type bird (coopers hawk maybe) dive bomb and hit a dove in flight from above. When the bird of prey saw me, it dropped the dove and got gone fast. When I walked over and picked up the Dove, its heart was punctured from both sides.

It made me glad we are too big to be their prey- they are so good at what they do its scary.

Bob Jameson has a good owl story if I remember right.

Owl or hawk catching a meadow vole and taking off after the snatch up.

With no tracks of the prey in powdery snow, bird of prey may have snatched a frantic low flying bird and landed hard with it before taking off. In Naval aviation terminology, a touch and go, heavy on the touch.

I now know it was a hawk or owl. I concede.
I just always found evidence of the pray or something to explain what happened
That's what makes this place so Great, always something to learn and someone willing to share their stories and knowledge
