Neat off-setting device ad by Montgomery Traps 1978. As I have stated in numerous posts, I’m a huge fan of these early Monty’s.

I only have a few but I know they are good because my little Montana specials are awesome.

Those were the traps the old timers taught me with. Still have and use a few.

You think about the traps woodstream was producing the same time; (Exception ~Newhouse~ ) lower quality from coils, long springs and odd ball junk like the #1 single spring coil & weak spring 1st soft catch 1.5 coils. Reversed jaw hook up to frame ect… I had lots of weak traps, until I grabbed the B&L lonsprings, Montgomery then Northwoods. During the same time, none of the above had good chain and swivel stock rigs,

Our equipment quality has certainly grown exponentially.

Still use these (modded SJ with levers and jaws) along with some 550's when coyotes are worth the effort. Like the 1.5 RJ for land sets. The square jaw 1.5 dogless is not that good. The only trap they made I don't care for was their #600 beaver BG. I even have and use the 220 size BG they only made for a short time. Springs on them are still stronger than anything except a Belisle.................... the (Mont. fan) mike[Linked Image]

the mike, I agree good traps for that time period and still today with a couple mod.s Ilike the #2 rj and #3 hi levers. The 220s were/are something else....a guy had to put them in a vise at the end of the season and bend the jaws back together....STRONG. Not sure, but I think Butera (got the idea from them) and came out with the BMI magnums after that...another super strong trap.

The Montana is the most underrated trap out there.

I'd certainly agree- I had a younger guy ask me about them one time and I told him that as a rule of thumb, about anything John Graham put his name on was top notch.

I have over 100 of the old #2, #3, and #4 Montgomery dogless. Any low lever I converted into high levers. Have several dozen Montana #3s as well. My favorite coyote traps.

I have about a dozen #2 regular lever traps. I've just 4 coiled most, but they hold coyotes with standard 2 springs also.

I like the Monty's and the newer version (Montana's) I have a dozen 1.5 monty round jaw. The Montana #3 is my favorite coyote trap and just got some #2's to try out next season.

I just loved the #2 dogless square jaw for fall trapping. I don't recall losing a single coyote out of a few hundred. Broke my back in a car wreck and sold all my coyote traps thinking I'd never trap again. Man I wish I had them back.

Do you have a closeup of the device to make offset?

The Montana 3s just have a round stock lug welded between the jaws about where the levers rest when spring. Because I only have offsets I do not know if the levers are the same or have a slightly bigger gap inside of them

Have some 4s, 3s and 2s.
Most of the big ones seem to have a pan that is different then the one in the picture. They set higher.
Some of the no2s have a pan that is like the one in the picture that has a rivet on it. The others don't have the rivet. The riveted pans set lower. You can't make the unriveted pan set as low and as flat. They all work but that one difference makes me like the early model better.

Thanks to Scott P. I added 2 dozen no2s to the arsenal a bit back. All sizes were low lever. A die grinder and a cutting bit fix them. Now all are high lever.

After adding an offset to the 3s and 4s I also thinned the jaws a bit to get the levers to go higher.
