Is the clothing you wear to visit the arctic, different from the clothing you wear if you live in the arctic? Asking for a friend.

Oops, I was replying to, and confirming AK timber tramp. He was a few posts up.

Start with the Carhartt insulated bibs, plenty large, with layers of poly fleece, and of course Bata bunny boots. I wish I could recommend the new ones, however, the reviews have not been stellar.
And a good hat; fur.
Of course, this is assuming it is actually going to be truly cold.

I think they said to expect temperatures down to minus 20 to minus 30 degrees.

a boat trip is one of the daytime activities. snowmobile/sled dog trips available; and of course...night time Aurora chasing.

a thought just occurred...eye protection. just ski goggles? what do you folks use?

A boat trip at -30 should be very interesting. I'd really like to know how that goes....! Is it an ice-breaker?

But remember that they are talking Celsius. -20 C = -4 F... that is not a bad temperature at all

good point, white17...I'll double-check, but I'd bet you're right!

-20°F is where real cold starts. And it's amazing the difference a few degrees makes at those temps. -15 feels nice after it's been -25. You wouldn't think you'd notice, it all sounds cold, but you will absolutely notice.

I think half our problem will be that we won't be really active during this trip (it's not like we'll be marking timber or working on a pipeline)...

more like being a [very cold] spectator than anything else.

The key is to have appropriate layers for the worst case scenario, and be able to remove them easily as needed based on activity level or being in a warm space (vehicle, shelter, whatever) because sweat is the enemy. And I cannot reiterate enough: good gauntlets and good boots/socks.

A water container that fits in an inside pocket of your parka is handy. Crazy how fast you get dehydrated in the cold. Once you’re dehydrated everything gets tougher. I’d start hydrating on the plane over if I were you. Have a great trip, sounds like a good one!

I survived...just got home.

I want to thank everyone again for all of your thoughtful responses (and for some of the funnier ones, too!)

They said the weather this winter has been very strange. They need snow. I guess we lucked out in that it really wasn't any colder there this week, than we see in a typical winter in Pennsylvania. Still, it made sense to prepare for the worst that was likely/possible.
