For avoiding non targets, specifically cats; can I try a scent pole set for fox? Does that seem to keep other critters away? And has anyone caught other species on scent pole sets?

All animals are curious and attracted to scented objects even cats. Especially if it is a new presentation found along their regular travel corridor. I don't know of any scented set that won't cause some curiosity and interest to an odor. Not sure what a scent pole set is ?

She might mean urine post set or what today is mostly called a flat set.

I have found that not using bait in my dirt holes set for fox cuts down on non-targets. I still get some because, like Bob said, everything is attracted to scented objects. But, using red fox lure and urine only seems to cut down on possums, coons and other unwanted catches.

Eh...wot?

I catch loads of coon on any kind of gland or urine. I have a friend trapping coyotes now. He can't keep the coon out of his scent/marking post sets. They are mostly boars now he is catching. We have lots of coon, maybe if there weren't so many, the results may differ.

If you’re in PA, you will catch free roaming cats. In SE PA we’re loaded with them. Never caught the same one again after a release……

My only advice is you might try a step down dirt hole if you aren't getting a lot of moisture. It's probably not fool proof but I've watched several bobcats work them and they wouldn't step in them despite walking around them for 5+ minutes. Also helps with deer and works pretty good on coyotes. Good luck

With the millions and millions of feral and house c@$ that just get put out at night in your state. Hey no such thing.
If you want a truly house furball proof set. Trap where steel traps makes his sets lol.
Very few house pets running loose at night in West Texas brush country. Sorry it is what it is.

Be careful because I catch most of my cats in post sets. The good news is that cats are relatively easy to set free after you work out the kinks on the first one. Then after they are released almost half of them will sit right there and pose for pictures while they clean themselves. Good times I assure you!

It goes both ways with post/rub sets, even with exposed trap...

WTG J. Straton- it happens but not very often I snag a coyote in an exposed set.

Why's everyone so stuck on using lures and bait?

Try a post set with zero lure, urine or bait...

Think fire hydrant. Your dogs gonna work it. Especially if there ain't no funky smells on it..

Once anything lifts a leg on it, it's no longer scent free.
I don't care what set you make, it's going to catch a nontarget !
I remember catching the same feral/barn cat 3 times on the very same scent in one day.
Turn it loose and it just seemed to go to a few sets down line.
3 MILES same cat .
end of story!

This is true however, there is value in utilizing everything at your disposal to minimize the non target.

Agreed , it's all you can do is your best to avoid them.
