When i used to target coon, if i didn't do drowning sets i used a wooden drag of some kind.
A wooden drag also gives the coons something to 'chew on'

#1 and 1.5 B&L Sureholds put a spring arm in the way so a coon has as much or more protection from self damage by chewing under the jaws as a1.5 DJ coil. Pans are a little small and stiffer so that doesn't help in the mink dept. but knew a lot of guys in Minnesota that used the 1.5 Stoploss type of trap where the coons weren't as common of a target (as mink) but worth the effort to keep one as a non-target.................. the mike

You can move the trap farther out and backfoot a coon

I've caught over 100 coons now in two years. I've never had a chewout. Had a few pullouts, but I can't imagine them chewing their own foot off.

The Duke 1 1/2 double jaw is a bit different than a Sleepy Creek or older Blake and Lamb or Victor double jaw. Personally I prefer either a single jaw #11 or a no bs double jaw. Both on drowners into 3 ft of water. If you can’t get the coon in over its head, it’s not going to drown. And if it can pull the 1 1/2 Duke out of the water, it will at least try to chew on the trap and its numb foot.

Heed what others have written!

Also, you are asking for problems if you have more than 12-inches of chain between the trap and the drowning wire.

I have experienced smaller/younger coon damaging themselves if they got hung up or chose not to go into deep water with Sleepy Creek #11. It was only with Sleepy Creeks. In these cases, they were caught well above the pads, up on the leg. All traps had mid-chain swivels as well as the swivels at the trap and drowning locks. I queried people on Tman and a couple said they’d seen it too but only with young of the year coon. Fortunately, MN coon tend to run on the bigger side and all the bigger coon were at the bottom of the drowner where they were supposed to be.

On my beaver drowners (coon too) i always shorten my trap chain down to a couple links if water depth is questionable.
At set location use a piece of wire to shorten chain to desired lenth

Spike369, the gap between the closed jaw and the depressed pan will allow a coon to get its teeth to the part of them that is numbed by the jaw pressure. I suspect the coon is chewing something numb as opposed to chewing itself. You’ll note, this chewing behavior isn’t above the trap jaw where they still have sensation.

I usually run the old victor #2 with no problems. Not targeting coon with them but have caught them, I try keeping them in water and haven’t had any chewing, only when they can get up on the bank is when I see it.
