Most guys here are about halfway thru main harvest. Usually everyone is wrapping that up at first of September as goldenrod takes over and then they make final harvest mid September. But timing of everything this year is way off here. Goldenrod is already being worked. Not sure if it’s going to be a long bloom or if the season is coming to end two weeks early this year. So far most of guys my age are figuring this is worst crop in their lifetime. The most recent bad year was 2003 but this summer is worse. The bad one prior was ‘72 but I was young enough that don’t recall it other than it’s one dad always talked about. And my dad always compared back to what his dad and grandfather said was bad in mid ‘50s. Maybe it’s just 20 year cycle. I also hear reports of a substantial short crop across parts of the main honey producing regions in western US so it could be interesting year overall

A little about Bob. For a west coast transplant he's about as good a north Georgia sourwood beekeeper as there ever was. Bob will go just about anywhere in the state to talk to a local club and refuses to take speakers fees and his operation is about as far north as you can go and not be in North Carolina. He's active in our state association which makes him an oddity as most commercial guys washed their hands of the Atlanta/UGA clique over a decade ago. Bob regularly donates time and bees to the UGA bee lab and participates in ongoing bee research.

I don't know Bob well but he's one of those guys that I enjoy being around and take note of all that e says when it comes to bees. The late Carl Webb was another.

Good to know, your opinion of him counts a lot with me. From his youtube videos he seems very willing to share his knowledge.

If you're ever passing through Rabun county pull into his store. Can't miss it only one main hwy through the county and his store is just up and across the hwy from the only Walmart in the county plus he has billboards up and down the hwy. Nice place he's got. He sells bee supplies, honey of all types, big plexiglass windows to watch his extraction line and if he's not out in field he'll most likely be in the showroom talking bees. It's kind of a big touristy thing for folks going to visit the mountains.

I extracted 90 gallons in mid July. Ready for the goldenrod flow next month. Hoping for 40-50 gallon more.

This was a milestone season for me. Got my first hives in 1974. Fifty consecutive years keeping bees.
