I'm allergic to it if it's fresh, makes me itchy and stuffed up.

I have had the same symptoms for 2 months. I believe it is lack of whiskey. I do know that Walnut dust can lead to some serious health problems.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I know it effects some of us turkey call builders, I myself don't have much trouble unless I'm in it several days without a break.

That is terrible! Why did you have to go two months without whiskey?

Yeppers. I get sick as a dog when I cut fresh cedar. Also get contact dermatitis from emerald cedars.

Just happy to be here.

Are you talking about western red cedar (soft) or eastern cedar (relatively hard)?

I've never heard of allergies to western red cedar before, but I'm sure it exists.

I cooped my self in a garage about 30 years ago and used a belt sander to smooth-out a couple hundred linear feet of 6x6 Alaska yellow cedar posts. I didn't wear a mask; really dumb. I developed an allergy to the dust, but after a couple of years it went away thankfully. BTW, Alaska yellow cedar is actually a cypress and not a cedar.

I think overwhelming your system with any kind of dust can cause you to go off kilter. Apparently your immune system thinks those little dust particles are pathogens.

I have not had any reaction, yet. Some go years with no adverse reaction to working with cedar and then out of the blue have allergic reaction to it. Yellow cedar sawdust feels like fiberglass when I get the sawdust on my skin, not with red cedar.

I've seen reactions to both. Back when I framed houses for a while all the fascia was western red. Had one guy that would get congested for a week if he was on the saw.

Your right on the dust. When I worked in a cabinet shop I figured out quick the dust collection and masks was your friend. The paint booth was the worst. Hacking up phlegm and swollen sinuses ain't fun.

Im allergic to port orford cedar. Got sick a few times till I realized it was from sanding arrow shafts. Bad sick, lightheaded and queasy and trembling. Ended up being a blessing in disguise because it led me to other shaft woods, and now I would not go back to PO cedar even if I wasnt allergic.

"red cedar" board bought at Menards .

My Doc. said that it's dust has a spoor/ spore? that gets in your nasale and the body attacks it like a fungus/mold.Allergy.

he gave me 1 pill for that. and a round of two a day for 10 days of something else.
2 different pills for nausea.

I'm feeling 50% better this morning.

it is the oil in the cedar that has effected your airways
one reason few insects can live off cedar
your immune is going into hyper mode...you will be effected by poison ivy now

According to locals in small communities in SEAK, Alaska Yellow Cedar is supposed to make a person mean tempered and eventually insane. They never cooked or built with it. Only used for tools. I do know if you sit around a yellow cedar fire, everyone including the dogs will wake up sneezing.

wipe all your tools off with EtOH to remove the oils ie the saw blades, because when you use them again the oil will be volatile with the heat of cutting.

Had a local custom sawmill sawyer here that had to quit his mill on account of how sick it made him. Sawdust can totally ruin your lungs like animal hair did mine (caused "Furrier's Lung).

I sat next to a yellow cedar fire many years ago. I and some other folks were under a tarp, but quite a bit of smoke was coming inside the tarped area. I woke up the next day with very blurry vision an eyes that felt sun burnt really bad.

Eastern Red Cedar is much harsher than other Cedars in my experience, more people seem affected by it.

I think by now we understand sucking in foreign material into the lungs is bad business, with most materials having their own named "osis".

Yet, I'm reaching for a cigarette as I type. Go figure.

Luckily I quit Oct10 1975, before they started adding sugar to the tobacco.

I like the smell of fresh cut eastern white cedar.
I also use cedar tea as a tonic-powerful immune system boost and high in vit c.
But no more than 3 cups a week.It contains thujone too much of which can be detrimental
