I have half dozen MB 450’s. Now that my shed is complete and my gear is more organized I wonder if I should get any more and prep them for fall. I also have DP’s. I have about six older models that I don’t really wanna use for land because they don’t have the cast jaws. I really don’t want to buy more than I will actually use but now that I’m getting better at making sets I might want to bounce around more and have them if I need them. I’m not a full time trapper like a lot of you guys but I feel like I should have more than six. Also I’m not sure about the benefit of offset jaws vs closed . I read that they just provide a higher lockup and aren’t necessarily better for the animals comfort. go to a Rony or convention and it will just happen then you will be able to look them all over and choose what you want to try. then you will see what you like buy some , try them this season then see what you like and buy more of them for next season.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Yes I think you could use more. I like to have more than I set so I have the ability to set more if I decide to.
Also it's fun to try different traps to see and learn what you like and don't like about each. There is always something I want to try. This year it was getting some long springs. Did I need any more coyote traps? No I had 2 doz that didn't even get put out last year but I wanted to try long springs so got some some off the trap shed.
Before that I wanted to try the dogless bridger #2 and mb 550. Tried them both and after a few years decided what I like and don't about each. Like I prefer how the Bridger's bed and the jaws on the 550. Both are very good traps but I lean toward the bridger at this point for how flat they set easy they bed and bigger jaw spread. Also they cost less. But I won't get rid of the 550 I like them to much.

Not sure what you mean about not wanting to use some of your traps because they don't have cast jaws. The vast majority of traps used for land sets don't have cast jaws.
But yeah, you're gonna need more than 6 traps.

As far as food issues from a trap far more problems come from fouled swivels and cold nights regardless of trap jaw thickness or material. That said naturally thicker does spread out the pressure more but other things have larger impact in my opinion.

The first year I trapped fox, here in Ohio, 1965. I started with 4, Victor #2 coils. I caught 12 red fox the first three days. Then I added two more traps and had one of them stolen the first night set.
So, for the season I caught 181 fox. About 2/3 read and other 1/3 grays. Don't remember the exact count of each.
I believe the fewer traps you have the better trapper you become. You have to learn quick and learn it right.
I was working a full time job at the same time. When water season came in... I got up at 4:00 AM and checked fox traps and checked water traps after work in the evening. That was the most fox I ever caught in one year.

The only thing, imo, that cast jaws do is give you a wider jaw face, and as mentioned, laminations do the same. But I wouldn't hesitate to use unlaminated traps either. I also agree with extra swivels being the key to good feet. Try one or two of your non-cast jaws and I bet you won't see any different in foot condition. Since you work in a vet's office maybe you could even make it an experiment and autopsy the feet from animals caught in both type jaws (with the same amount of swivels and level of entanglement) to assess whether there's any difference in foot damage. Hint: You might be surprised by the results.
