My neighbor bought me a weed torch & 2 fuel cylinders for helping him remove some nuisance weeds. I used it tonight for the first time ever and it's amazing. I wish I would have had it a year ago, or more. I guess I won't know for sure that it was effective right now but it sure seemed to work great tonight. I was hitting garlic mustard & some other annoying weeds. 'Big time saver vs some manual methods. Also, no herbicides to deal with. Many upsides I think, we'll see. I carried an extra cylinder & small fire extinguisher in a backpack, but the tank lasted all evening.

[Linked Image]

We got it for garlic mustard but I could see it working on other weeds.

I was thinking a little more along the lines of this
https://www.harborfreight.com/propa...v4xMZz5tg5BphUS4vb_xZfF3RSkaAprkEALw_wcB

but yours is a lot easier to carry , this one needs more like a 20# cylinder on a back pack frame.

I had one of these , it worked fairly well , maybe a little over kill on some things.

We use those to burn the spines off prickly pear cactus for the cattle to eat in winter. Cows get tune in on that roaring sound and come a running.

Pear burner smile
I have seen them in south Texas with a 50' hose and a 250gal propane tank on wheels behind a tractor for that purpose

I have one of the bigger ones, runs on a 20# bottle with about 6' of hose
Can get a brush pile roaring in short order or fire up the BBQ pit

I have the one from Harbor freight that green posted. Works good with a 20lb tank stuff the hot end in wet brush pile. When I was a kid we used one to burn weeds under electric fence. Now that Im some what crippled I usually use my 10lb tank. Way more mobile. My son is a firefighter instructor. He borrowed mine then bought his own. Uses it to light fires in rooms when their doing student interior burn classes.

Either size is handy for lighting camp fire if you're in a hurry.

Mine takes a 20lb tank has longer probably 6' and the handle is longer than the one linked. Less moving around and more reach.

the end of mine was the hose isn't particularly UV resistant and it cracked in like 2 years and started leaking.

a 25 foot hose of good rubber would have been a good upgrade set the tank down and work for a bit then pick it up

I went away from weed burning in the garden and fence and never got a second one.

also not a bad idea to keep a hose handy , I might have lit part of my garden on fire once

Harbor Freight had a major recall on theirs a few years ago, might want to double check on them before committing.

Just remember that some rocks explode when heated with a weed burner. I found out that exploding rocks are cool to watch, but hurt when they hit your face and leave bruises and burns that last for weeks.

I have the HF one thats 340,000 BTU. When I pulled the trigger for the first time, yes I had a big smile. They advertise 1 million + btu on Amazon. If that’s a real number, thatd be impressive to see how fast weeds shriveled up from those.

I have the big one and I burn entire surface of my 6,000 square foot garden to kill weed seeds. It’s super fast the small torch would be hopeless for that.

Do you burn over bare earth to kill the seeds, or over the weeds once they are growing?

How often do you have to do it?

Do you lose any fertility?

I would like to find an easier way to keep weeds down.

I've used a Red Dragon weed burner with a 20lb bottle a lot to burn CRP and pastures, but never to actually burn weeds. Might need to try that.

Don't burn poison ivy, the smoke if inhaled will make you a hurting pup!

Question for you pyromaniacs. Small weeds an inch or two tall do you actually burn them completely or can you just scorch them?

Thanks

nope just blanch them

so liek greens turn dark green when dropped in boiling water

you run the torch over a weed and it turns darker in seconds , you are boiling the water in the leaf
then you give it some time and it dies and turns brown.
it is a wave of the torch in most cases to wilt the small stuff.

you only need to harm the cell structure to make it stop photosynthesis

they used to use steam back in the day , a steamer on a wagon and a hose and a rake like steam head
drag that through the soil and it killed the little weeds and many insects

Anyone use this on small buckthorn or berry canes?

I'm fighting both, plus weeds in a section of my gravel driveway.

I'm definitely getting one of the HF models.

one of the reasons not to get the HF is a short hose
the weed dragon costs more but you get 10 feet of hose.

if your working on a 20# tank setting the tank down and working an area with a longer hose is nice
25 feet of hose would be really nice set up the tank in a wagon or cart. and work a good area then move.

I'll just run the HF with a 5# or 11# LP tank. I don't have much do.

The only thing I have found to control goats head is a torch in the spring, until you till the ground then you need it again !!

I use a five gallon tank with a 30 foot hose tank is put on a hand truck to roll around when need it and the torch is a regular long shot, which is adjustable, works great !!

I've found you only need to hit the leaves until they curl and it's enough to kill the plants !!

30' hose, interesting. I never thought of that cart option.

I've found you only need to hit the leaves until they curl and it's enough to kill the plants !!

30' hose, interesting. I never thought of that cart option.

drag a cart in tall grass?

long hose big bottle.,,,,,,man up....

I start charcoal, our wood fired oven and wood fired cooker with a weed burner. It gets it all going at once and saves a ton of time. Not to mention the cool factor.

It'll be nice for winter brush pile burning.

Does anyone use weed torches this time of year? I have some annoying weeds around the homestead. 'Am thinking about burning the seed heads yet this winter.

A couple weeks ago I torched a bunch of seed heads. I was surprised to see some seed pods yet that I blasted. I would have thought they'd drop on their own by now.

Tomorrow I'm planning to burn a brush pile & am anxious to use the weed torch to start it.

There are organic farmers who have built tractor mounted or motoroized propane weed burners on row crops and or larger garden areas. I am sure there are other fuels and designs. I know there are some companies that sell larger scale burners instead of the single torch like ones discussed above.

Anyone use the extended wand 1# propane tank torches....Probably no good for heavy use but for spot burning easier than the handheld torches....?

I see Amazon has some for about 20 bucks

the end of mine was the hose isn't particularly UV resistant and it cracked in like 2 years and started leaking.

a 25 foot hose of good rubber would have been a good upgrade set the tank down and work for a bit then pick it up

I went away from weed burning in the garden and fence and never got a second one.

also not a bad idea to keep a hose handy , I might have lit part of my garden on fire once

lol I thought I was.going to burn off a section of field. I mowed around the area I wanted about 20 feet for a break then went to the end the wind was blowing to so the fire was fighting the wind. the plan was to burn off about 20' afor a nice break then light it up on the other end and let it burn with the wind feeding it tell it hit the burn out area
Plan was working great tell the wing changed direction and picked up. by the time I got it out I didn't have any arm hair, eye lashes, and was read like I was sun burnt.

Time before that I was burning off a fence line. Thought I got a hot ash in my eye keep working about 30. finally went back to the house and found I has something black in my eye. it would move but only a little and stayed in one spot. A closer look showed it was an ant and it was stuck becues it bit onto my eye ball before it died. I thought about going to the eye Dr but finally just grabbed it with tweezers taking some eye tissue with it bit got it out.

Are you talking about the ones that look like canes?

I guess, basically a hand torch with a long tube head, with a handle instead of holding the tank....

All in all a handy tool....

I use this kind for bigger jobs and starting logs in the fire pit.

This kind is perfect for walking around burning CRP, not dealing with a hose or big propane tank. It is light and uses small green tanks and has the igniter built in.
