What is a good anvil and how much are they selling for these days?

Home shop use.

Worth plenty if you drop it on a Roadrunner’s head.
Asking for a friend wink

In all seriousness where can you even find an anvil anymore? That’s cool

Auctions or you can buy them new, the last one I saw sell on big iron was about 10 dollars a pound.

I know a couple anvil buyers and they said the price dropped. They said the tv show Forged in Fire had the demand up pretty good until many lost interest and started dumping them back on the market. Makes sense to me but I dont buy them that often so its second hand news.

A good place to look/have an eye out , is a scrap yard.

Contact your local scrap yard. Get cozy with them. Tell them you will pay a premium over scrap value for an anvil. Give them your phone number to call when one comes in.
I have gotten a few this way , even flipped a couple for profit

Who in their right mind would scrap a perfectly good vintage anvil? If not a crime in the legal sense, ought to be a crime against humanity.

I'm thinking small to medium sized blacksmith anvil. Kind a farm shop might have around. Most are not aware of all the shaping and cutting tools that came with them. Ideally, I'd like to start a collection of those too.

But still would like to know some specifics on values. I'm seeing numbers like $1,000 and up. If so, more than I thought.

Bought mine from Harbor Freight some 20 years ago. Was around 80 bucks as I remember. Certainly higher now. All steel, 110lb. Good anvil. I'd stay away from the cast iron.

In well advertised auctions, with lots of anvils, hardy tools, hammers, tongs, blowers and other blacksmith tools, anvils go very high, up to $10.00 a pound. In auctions, that are poorly advertised you can still get them much cheaper, but not as cheap as the late 90s, when you could buy huge anvills for well under $100.00. I'm watching an auction right now, in the middle of nowhere, that has most of the contents of a blacksmith shop.for sale. So far, prices are very good still. It just depends on who else finds it.

They have a broad axe I want.

Cast iron anvils are for decorations, do not work for hammering. Will dent and chip instantly.
A decent anvil will ring like a bell when struck with a steel hammer.

$1.00 per pound is the most I would pay.

This is what I'm seeing on Craigslist. And type and size of anvil I'm thinking about. This one priced at least double what I would have thought.

https://stlouis.craigslist.org/tls/d/arnold-anvil/7737266896.html

I know some brands were more sought after than others, but can't remember any of the names. Or the various patterns.

quality anvils are sold by pound weight and makers

The anvil in your craigslist ad is 256 lbs. which is large and that is why the price is $1250.His asking price may not be to far off. There may be a maker mark on it that is not visible. The overall condition looks very good.

For your use you describe 150 lbs should work which would be cheaper. maybe 600 to 800 for good quality

The price depends on who made the anvil and it's weight. Peter Wright, and Hay Budden anvils are top of the line sought after anvils that will always bring top dollar if they ain't beat to death.

Anvils are so popular for decorations, that they make hollow and aluminum, nonfunctional ones, for just that purpose now.
