In 1913 the brothers [Abernathy] Louis [Bud] age 13, and Temple age 9, rode from Oklahoma to New York City on the Indian Motorcycle seen in the photo. This was not the Abernathy boys firs adventure.

In 1909 the two brothers, Louis “Bud” aged nine and Temple five, encountered a host of Old West obstacles, including wolves and wild rivers, when they rode more than 1,000 miles from Oklahoma to Santa Fe and back – ALONE!.

The following year (1910) the brothers set their sights on New York City, which they reached after a month of hard riding.

In the summer of 1911, they did the impossible. They rode nearly 4,000 miles, from New York to San Francisco, in only sixty-two days. Once again, the Abernathy Boys had made a historic ride without any adult assistance and accomplished an equestrian feat which has never been equaled.

Great pic. Back when you were a man at 10 years old. 90% of today’s 30 year olds couldn’t do that.

They must of had their fuel with their camping and food supplies or stopped at Bed & Breakfast or maybe Walmart and gassed up.

What did they eat and where did they get fuel?

The roads back then were mostly dirt and there weren't very many gas stations.

I detected a clue that might help answer that. The piece mentions an "equestrian" feat. Well, when they got hungry enough they ate that horse and got a motor bike to finish out the trip.

My grandmother had 2 of those Indian motorcycle and one
Harley Davidson in her old rundown garage. When she passed away my gold digging
Ant bought the farm..that farm today with all the stuff in the house would be in the millions.

Interesting story. Seems there are 2 storys about the New York expedition.
This one and another claiming they rode their horses to NY.to meet President Roosevelt and drove a Brush motor car, which they bought in NY, home after sending their horses home on a train. The indian motorcycle came later.
Must have been quite a pair.

Their father was a sheriff. He was well known for catching wolves by hand.
