Thinking about buying or trading for a 30-30. I see some Henry lever action .45 Cal at a small hardware store here. What is the longest distance they (45) will have on killing big game?

Any pros or cons of the Cal or use of a 30-30 in general.

Back in the day I killed a lot of deer with a Marlin 30-30. 125ish yards and under they were a gonner.

I prefer the 30 30. Have a Marlin 336that has killed 60 deer, twice as many as any of my other calibers. With the Lever Revolution ammo it's very accurate and deadly at 200 yards. mikec

You can greatly improve 30-30's capabilities in a bolt gun where you can load lighter, pointed bullets.

I have nothing clever to put here.

In a lever action 30-30 I’ve killed deer out to about 200 hundred yards. The gun could maybe go out a little farther than that but with open sights that’s as far as I would shoot. Killed many of different critters with a 30-30 and before Covid for us non reloader types… 30-30 was one of the cheapest “deer” rounds to shoot

Some great advice as usual and Thanks. I do have a Browning LA 243 and haven't shot it in >20 years and would say it is 50 plus years old. I had some questions on it last year and 160 & 330 helped me out with good advice about that gun.

While the thutythuty is ancient, 1895, by today's standards it'll do 90% of the deer and hog killing that needs done for 90% of the camo clan. Particularly east of the big ditch.

Most deer are shot well inside the 200 yard limit of the 30-30.

If you need to poke past 200 then the 30 caliber of 1906 hasn't been substantially bettered since its introduction, incrementally yes but not substantially.

But the key selling point of the 30-30 is the rifles it comes in, lever guns.

Generally light weight under 7lbs, not the best platform for moonscopes, tripods, five point slings and all the other tactijunk folks like to encumber themselves with.

Even better, no other design lends itself to fast uninterrupted fire from the shoulder while staying on the sights without the risk of dropping or losing magazines.

If anyone has a pile of ONCE fired brass
I'll trade for fair value of traps.

One tip, if using a Marlin, make sure the lever
is squeezed up tight for the shot.

That caliber alone has killed more game than any others. Yes you don't have the range but that's ok. I do a lot of bow hunting and a lot of the deer I have killed with the rifle or muzzleloader have been in archery range.

I've hunted with a Marlin 30-30 for many years. Always have loved the lever action. But have missed/passed up on enough 150+ yard shots in the river bottoms to cause me to buy a new deer rifle. Browning BLR in 7mm-08. My last deer rifle.

I picked up a Model 94 in .32 WS a few months back not taking ammo availability into consideration. The local Walmart has box after box of .30-30 for under thirty dollars. The only brass I've found so far is $40 for a box of twenty. That's just the brass and doesn't include shipping.
