Marion county is wide open country lots of grass and lots of wide open space.. No one is roping a yote no matter how wide open it is. Once in Lincoln County Kansas a buddy and me had a yote pull the whole trap out somehow broke the cable stake. There was snow and we could see where he drug the trap on his foot .

Well we followed in the ranger 1000 and sure enough it busts out from some big round bales and it was on. We drove all over full pedal to the metal weave in and out I was trying run it over and every time we got close slip cut and off the other direction it would go. Well it finally wore out but we got em and the trap with the dispatch pistol. But man what a ride.. lol maybe a horse could juke it out but I doubt it. Yes Sir would have way more experience there than I?

Couldn't catch the duckers and the weavers, I've tried pretty hard believe me. But some will just line out and run straight. I've seen it on a horse and on a side by side. That's the one I need to find in they right spot for me to have a chance to catch. Speed wise they aren't that fast compared to a good horse.

Kansasace2 , it HAS been done. Sandhills are wide open. Some of Marion county is open but a lot of it is row crops and hedgerows.

Cowboys have roped everything with hair and can run. Including grizzlies and lions. Even watched footage of a guy roping a giraffe

Not sure if your Ranger has a horn or not, but next time when they start to dodge, lay on the horn. When chasing them down a road it works probably seven times out of ten to cause them to run straight away from you down the road rather than dodging off to the side. Often they can already be turning and heading for the brush and if you lay on the horn they well turn and run straight away from you until they disappear under your bumper.

I don't know that I would recommend installing a horn on your saddle unless you have a really bomb proof horse, if you do try it though, make sure and have a friend along to video it and post the results here.

About one or two times a year I’ll sure wish I had some horse flesh underneath me.

Usually it’s when the mornings festivities are over, it’s 9-10 in the morning getting hot, and I’m 5-6+ miles from the truck.

Quiet, cover some ground. And benign.

I don’t know how many times I’ve rode past coyotes, 200-500 yards off and as long as you don’t ride directly at them, they stay pretty calm.

They know what a horse and rider looks like, and I’ve never been able to just ride right up to one, but they certainly don’t perceive it as the same as a man on foot, a buggy, or wheeler.

Kansasace2,
I know Marion county Kansas VERY well. My son Noah just graduated from Tabor College right there in Hillsboro KS with his accounting degree. He was a pitcher for the Tabor Bluejays. We spent a lot of time in that area. Loved our trips to Kansas. Very nice people and he felt right at home. The body shop over in Marion KS took excellent care of him when his car was hit by another vehicle. I couldn’t have asked for a better place for my son to live and attend college for the two years he spent there.
Great story on the coyote.
Jim

We always commented to each other what great trapping county that area seemed to be. He loves trapping coyotes and cats with me up here in SE Nebraska.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I have had similar experiences what you had. The one thing I discovered with the times it has happened to me is they had a den very close by and fear of humans seem to not make much difference. At least to a point they will play their bluff. Just my 2¢
