Hello,
A friend of mine sent me a link to this thread a few days ago and I just wanted to take a second to thank everyone for the kind words about the story. It was something else to see something I had written compared to a couple of other stories that I hold in such a high regard and was one of the best compliments a fella could receive.
I do a lot of outdoor writing and have several stories in Fur Fish and Game, Muzzleloader magazine and a couple of others but, this one is the only one I can think of that I have integrated anything about my military service into. Most are hunting, fishing or trapping related. A deer camp to remember from November 21 is similar but speaks on and about the passing of the people that taught us what we know today and how the world around us is changing. If your a fan of old school deer camps it would probably be something you would like.
The river I spoke about in Fishing with Papaw is the Russell Fork. If your ever in Southwest Virginia and near a place called The Breaks. Do yourself and your eyeballs a favor and have a look. Its the deepest gorge east of the Mississippi and the old Russell Fork runs right down its center carving a little deeper every day.
I just wanted to say again. Thank you. Seeing someone compliment a story you have written for me personally is worth more than the few bucks you make off having one published. Sometimes you see just how many of us out there share the same experiences.
