I imagine the oil is similar to seal oil?

The seal I had, the oil came out of the blubber at room temp also and your hand temperature, stuff got everywhere and it had quite an odor, lol

Whale oil is mellower than seal oil. Seal oil has a strong smell and flavor compared to whale oil.

They call the dried meat " Black Meat" seal meat is very dark and turns black too.

Yes, cover it with cheese cloth, I use a piece of tissue for a cover. It must be stirred every day with a wooden spoon or stick. Once it turns to oil there will be rinds at the bottom.
You can then put a lid on it and keep in the freezer for freshness. When it turns yellow, its rancid and not used then.
some use it for lure and it works. I bet it would be a great coon bait.

I dont like to use it because the oil can get in the fur and that's nasty then.
