Just a general observation from my working years---I find your above statements pretty interesting. World is made up of all types of people with personalities and traits---some might be called a slacker while they dont see themselves that way while others might be seen as overachiever, etc. A good % of those that I've seen drive themselves pretty hard working had a real hard time finding the end game or slowing down. Retirement at 60 turns into 61, 62 then 65. I dont have any real solutions for you. I can be a touch the same way in some regards and pacing myself lately has been way more of a challenge than I anticipated. You already recognize the potential downside of working alot could have on your health and family time. Trying to sort that out into a path forward is a different beast.

I've been working "on the road" for the last 25 years, missed most Christmas concerts, actual birthdays, sporting events, even missed the birth of one child. Woke up one day and they were grown up. Millions of people live that lifestyle.

I don't recommend it to anyone. If I could do it again I'd have moved the family or found a different job.

I worked with a guy that would sell back all his vacation every year. He ended up turning into a bitter old man and everyone was glad to see him retire with over 50yrs of time with the company.

As far as taking care of the family financially, I think most of us are worth more, monetarily, dead than alive, lol. With retirement, SS, and insurance policies, I sleep with one eye open!!

This site is an interesting place, where else can you ask for opinions and advice on nearly any subject, and get such a variety of well thought out "answers"?
If nothing else Providence was able to express his thoughts in public ,sorta, in a safe space and was willing to entertain varying opinions, even the ones that might hurt.

With the vast accumulated knowledge here, it's a cheap, no nonsense group of counselors, lol.

PF, I hope you find the balance that works for you.

This has been an interesting read.

I don't know any self-made, successful people that work "just enough." They work their (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) off.

These are successful professional types, tradesmen, blue collar oilfield friends, farmers, etc. Again, you have to balance family and well being.

It's like anything else--a man has freewill. If he wants to be financially successful, he generally has to earn it. Nobody gives it to him--unless the punk inherits it or just gets lucky.

If a man just wants to get by, that is his choice--just stay off the dole and don't resent others for achieving more--both are serious problems in this country on the right and left.

Last thing, there is value in teaching your kids to work hard by example while also teaching them the balance of family and well being.

Honestly pf. Its only a problem if you or your family think so. It requires sacrifice from all.

As was said, Jesus invites us to reorder our lives with his kingdom first. You cant serve two masters, and yet it sounds like you may be trying to serve multiples. Thats not for me to call you out on since I dont know your heart. Thats a conversation between you and Jesus. Financial security/retirement can be an idol just like anything other than Jesus. What is the fruit of your work tendencies when it comes to all aspects of your life? Does it produce peace, love, joy, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control? If not, it is probably a branch that needs some pruning

Exactly....its not for us to judge others..PERIOD. GOD CALLS us to all accomplish his will. Some listen, some dont. We are all still human and prone to mistakes.

For over 10 years I worked up to 110 hours a week between my full time job and my ADC business. Allowed me to invest alot and retired at 55.
Looking back I regret it. Lost 10 years of my life. Only benefit was early retirement.
Been retired 10 years now and I couldn’t work a job if I had to.

Instead of a physiologist you might want to see a psychiatrist.

I’ll make it simple…if you’ve missed school functions, firsts, birthdays, holidays, etc, then you’ve put your job above you family and work too much.

It's a good thing some people do. Otherwise we wouldn't have over the road semi drivers, airline pilots, train engineers and the list goes on

Yes, but to work 100hrs a week isn’t required. If so, name what jobs require that? He’s volunteering to spend time away from his family, he’s not made to do it. Heck, my oldest youngest is single and I tell him to work all he can and save up. He works 7 days a week and 12hr shifts. He will take off a weekend for a break every now and then, but he’s SINGLE. There’s a big difference, lol.

Preach on.

You still need balance but let's face it--too many people in this country are lazy. And, it's getting worse.
