How long does the average hot water heater last? The wife said ours is leaking, could that be an easy fix or are we looking at a new one? The one we now have was installed in 2006.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

Lots of factors. Water quality, manufacturer quality, routine cleaning (I'm not convinced that matters these days),where it's located. Nothing is built to last anymore.
If you're sure it's definitely the rank leaking, replacement is in order.

It's an electric hot water heater.

@pushing 20 years old I would replace it vs risking a faster leaking rupture and the water damage that comes with it. If it happens when no one is home or in the middle of the night.

In my experience 20 years is a very long time on electric. Cheap to replace. If the tank is leaking just get rid of it

My 1974 sears lasted till 2008. Amazing and that is with well water, oh it was a electric model. New one is now over 15 will replace when the first thing goes wrong, don't need surprises at my age......jk

they usually last approximately 3/4 of a nanosecond after warranty expires.

Newer models will be more energy efficient, and help pay for itself.

LOL @ white17, I am not handy that is for sure. And I doubt I would pass the handsome test.

You got great service from that one. Good luck with the next. Depending on how they are plumbed, replacement can be easy. The power part is no harder than changing a light fixture.

They don't last like they used to. Heating elements, controller, gasket and valves are all replaceable. But, if the tank is leaking, it's time to replace.

Why would you heat hot water? It's already hot. Sounds like you don't need a water heater.

If you don't heat hot water on won't stay hot.
